I'm a Day Trader, and need to know how the high speed connections in Pattaya are.

Hey guys! Helios from D.C. area officially a Pattaya addict now. Anyway, I'm a day trader, and I've been pretty successful at what I do. I'm very fortunate to have a job like this as it allows me the freedom from actually working for someone else...Not that there's anything wrong that though. I just want to know if Pattaya has high speed stable internet available for someone in my field. It would truly make my dream closer.

Just a little on me on how I got started. I'm 25 years old, I graduated college 3 years ago, and went decided to go to trading school right after so I could supplement my income when I got a real job (Never got a job working after by the way), but all in all I fell in love with it! Especially the amount of money one can make in a week. Yes, there are risks but there are risks in everything, its how you control your risk that really separates the successful ones from the non. Anyway, I've been going through the forum and have read a lot about the depressing lives us addicts have to return to after our trip from paradise (Pattaya). So maybe we could help each other out with making our dream come true. If any of you are interested in Day trading let me know, maybe I can help your dream become a reality as well.

To be honest I would carry on your day trading in the States and use the funds to have wild times here X times a year.

The internet in general down here is not that stable. I have Fibre Optic internet and that goes down a few times a day for redials etc. So if you were on an important trade you could have lost your shorts.

I think it will inevitably get better more so in the short to near term as 4G branches out. You are young enough (possibly too young to move here now) to wait a few years while technology catches up then you will have the best of both worlds

Only some areas of BKK and Chiang Mai have 3G.

All other areas in Thailand still live in the stone age.

I am using EV-DO and download are +- 1000 kbps - download 150 kbps.

Unless you can pay 200 USD a month for a 'decent line/speed" (1 year contract +) you are still prone to "cut offs" whatever you choose here. A few traders here in Pattaya, they seems to manage although a secondary "back up line" is needed.

I agree, internet speeds often suck even here in Bangkok...I do not do any trading on line so I just deal with the drop outs...I have even changed apartments due to internet reliability! I'm in and out of the country quite often these days so its not so bad for me...Right now my girlfriend got us a good connection, so maybe things are looking up! I am still over in Honolulu right now, so I'm not sure, but I think she got it with one of the cable tv companys. (in Bangkok) :GoldenSmile1:

Cheers

:001_Thank_You5: There are a few day traders here too. Trade them in 2 to 5 times a day!

But a question for you...any particular website to train up/and or get information on...

for the trading firm...I found TD Ameritrade the best...

day trading in Thailand means you will be working at night hours. Better to have a few beers and roll some dice or play pool

The most reliable internet company in Pattaya that I have found so far is CAT, the downside is its also the most expensive. A 4 megabyte connection is about 3500 baht a month.

I use Tradestation as my trading platform. Its a lot more advanced than TD Ameritrade, but a little harder to understand. It doesn't take long to understand how to use it like a pro though. I was trained by ONLINETRADINGACADEMY. I wanted to have professionals traders who are now retired to train me, so I took some courses at their locations. Let me know if you have any questions about them.

Helios, wow, we have the same interests. I presently work as a an IT/software project manager by day, and I'm back testing some currency trading algorithms by night. (Don't get me wrong. They are definitely not high frequency. I know that currencies had their high frequency days back in the early 2000s.) I'm more looking at if I can consistently make $50-$100 a day without risking more than 1% to 2% of capital per trade.

I have never used Tradestation, but my thinking is that the core of my trading platform should be hosted in a data center in the U.S. especially when I am traveling overseas. That way, there is less risk of slippage or, worse, wholesale down time to my trading algorithms. Have you looked Amazon Web Services as a possible host for your automated trading algorithms? AWS for us IT nerds is fairly easy to try out compared to a raw install of Linux OS.

Another way to get around the crappy infrastructure is to join a prop trading firm. Yes, you do need a series 7, but as a compensation, you get a much higher leverage, and you get access to better infrastructure.

The internet is often terrible.

painfully slow speeds and regular drop outs.

Free wifi is always terrible.

The internet shops can be ok, but many seem to run the whole computer on what must be a domestic broadband line.

I can be like going back the days of 52k modems

Hey Geeberish, it seems that we do have the same interests considering that I'm trying to break into the IT industry, and you already being in the IT industry. If you're looking into day trading currencies, I highly recommend that you step away from the more unregulated SPOT Forex and move to the highly regulated Forex Futures. I wouldn't dare day trade spot forex, and IF I did, I don't think I wouldn't trade on anything under 15 min time frames, which wouldn't really be day trading anymore from my perspective. Swing trading forex is much better IMO. Don't have to be behind the computer all day, HUGE returns instead of the smaller returns you would get from day to day trading. I can spend less time finding trades in a swing trade in a week than a day trade and make much larger returns. On top of that, you're less likely to make more bad trades. I guess it all depends on your style of trading though.

As far as day trading goes, I only stick to Futures included forex futures. The equities (stock) market just doesn't provide the leverage and 24 hour trading advantage futures and forex provides me. I'm rapidly moving away from day trading to swing trading nowadays. Once I get comfortably good with swing trading, I can look into getting a job in the high paying industry thus giving me two sources of incomes. By the way, don't get me wrong about day trading, I'm not trying to bash it here, but every trader is different. You can be just as successful day trading. I just recommend you to try various styles (There's really only 3), so you can find what really suits you. HELL, you can even do all if you want! lol

Currencies definitely had there high frequency movements back in the 2000's, but they it was even better when the world economies started to collapse. If one had shorted the British pound when it was at 2 dollars to a pound with $1000, you could have turned that into 50 grand in just 4 months! Currencies are still high frequency, you just have to play the high volume ones like the pound, euro, and yen.

Lastly, I do think its wise that your trading platform should be hosted in the United States. I don't know how the laws in other countries work in regards to trading accounts, but anytime something went wrong here (rare for me), it didn't long to fix it. I can't say too much about this because I've never used a trading platform from another country, but I'm sure there's plenty of information out there on that stuff. Also, I don't know much at all about that algorithm stuff you're talking about. I like to keep my trading simple in relation to the basic laws of supply and demand. People make trading way too complicated than it should be, and that's why I think so many fail.

P.S. No clue what AWS is, and no clue how tough a raw install of Linux OS. Guess I have a lot of work to do if I want to break into the IT industry. Maybe you can shed some light on this for me? PM if you can.

  • 4 months later...

Hey Guys - I was just searching to see if I could find any day traders in Pattaya now. I trade almost everyday. Funny thing, my Net here at the guest house is very good (and fast). I have only been down in the middle of a trade (NYSE hours) 3 times in 6 weeks.

Gotta admit it was hectic, had to get dressed and headed for the door all 3 times to find Net but all 3 times it came back in less than 10 minutes. I trade very short term normally, my longer term stuff is much less traded.

Anyway, if there are any guys out there that are trading and want to meet once in awhile, let's do it. I have a feeling my practices are pretty rudimentary (just use ETrade with advanced services, basically a L2 screen) but I've had good luck since arriving this time, since late July. Part of that was from gold. - SS

I experienced the fastest connection I have ever had in Thailand only last month with connection speeds to equal that of western countries, when it worked!

It was free wifi at the hotel but regularly dropped out.

The internet has without doubt speeded up over the last year but the drop outs still rule unfortunately :(

Wha's like us?
