buying a lap top in thailand

mai

Recommended Posts

Many shops are telling me they can arrange it, to put on a copy of windows 7 and microsoft office, and it will work fine.

BUT.........

1) They only guarantee it 1 month. (in UK most computers are sold with Windows 7 installed and a 60 day MS office trial). Are they trying to con me me just trial versions THAT WILL RUN OUT???????

2) Does a copy mean you get annoying pop up messages all the time saying i need to pay or something ?????

3) Does putting a copy of MS products on the laptop mean you then have issues with the guarantee/warranty for the lap top itself ???? I can imagine returning it for repair and they say - its screwed becuase this has copy of windows......we cant help you.

NOTE : The shops that sell the PCs are saying they can't put on the copy, but they can recommend a little shop next door who can put the MS copy on !!!!

I bought a desktop at Carrefour. They offered Windows 7 but I wanted Vista. Everyting works fine for 2 months now. Ive got installed a cracked version of windows vista, service packs and office (I dont know if real of cracked). Anyway, the have got a external harddisk with everything on it. You can watch them installing everything inside Carrefour.

I'm amazed anywhere is selling legitimate copies.

Most places just use pirate copies.

I would assume if a shop is putting it on for you that it will be a copy.

A legitimate windows application would cost 5,000 to 10,000B. and I don't think the thais get it cheaper.

its 100 to 200B to get a cd with a hacked copy on. and they can put that on as many pcs as they like.

If they do get you something non-hacked then a trial copy is likely. which is maybe why they only support it for a month.

Unless you are actually living in thailand, I have always found that laptops and digitel cameras are cheaper in my home country (australia) thats where I bought mine. the after sales service in thailand can be very poor, often they dont want to know you after the sale is made and everyone runs for cover when you come in with a problem. Perhaps a farang run business, like Liberty computers, might be a better choice but I would still be inclined to get one "back home"

Have to agree, even if I was living here I would wait until I went home and get one in the UK. Better price for specific spec, guaranteed genuine software, and aftersales. Plus you don't get THAI letters cluttering up the keyboard !

I am probably going to buy a new laptop soon. However, I will not be buying it in Thailand for the reasons stated above. You will almost certainly get a computer with a legitimate copy of Windows 7 for the same price (or less) as at home without the headache. You should be able to get a cracked copy of office in Tucom.

Thanks for replies.

Actually I have checked prices UK vs Thailand.

I think Thailand is cheaper.

Big C have 16,990 Acer 14 inch, Intel Pentium, 320 GB HD, 2GB RAM. C

ant get that UK. Plus if you fly out (within 3 months is it ??) you get 7% back. So thats 300 quid.

Nothing like that in PC World.

Actually that deal is in Tuk com third floor (also incl. VAT she said).

Plus the Thai computers seem to have many extras BAG, Internet security 1 year, Bluetooth installed on even cheap computers.

Strangely, there never seems to be any deals and big discounts here, whereas back home older models may get 50-100 discount. Prices pretty much the same every shop.

And, if you spend more time here, then why not buy here ?

If you buy back home and it breaks out here, what good is the international warranty?

Are you going to spend a whole day trying to find an office in BKK and then drop it off for 1 week?

Better just to forget the warranty - unless major issue - take it back to the Thai shop you bought it, and let them fix it fast.
