Risky or Stupid?

Featured Replies

Hello fellow dudes . I've already paid my tickets and will be landing on April 28th. Whats the atmosphere like in Patts? Should I just pass on the trip to Patts and go maybe to Cambodia or Phillipnes? This will be my second trip so I'll know what to expect but not really interms of attitudes towards Farangs, are we still welcomed in Patts with open arms and is it worth the risk if things turn ugly. Also is there any Canadians that will be there on the 28th till 14th of May if so lets hook up and party hardy! Thanks you all from Sly!

While it's no guarantee of the outcome of the current situation, I have, by coincidence been in Thailand for every coup in the past 25 years and I've never once noticed it effect tourists directly.

Yes, i was commenting on succesful coups, where a government has been replaced, there were also those airport demo at the end of 2008 that inconvenienced many. Would you advise him to changes his plans?

i would say a closed airport in 2008 impacted tourists directly and was more than just an inconvenience.

People around the world are canceling trips to Thailand so I think it is a fair question he is asking. The government in Taiwan raised a red alert and is forcing tour operators to refund money to customers.

The Thai government declared a State of Emergency in Bangkok, Nonthaburi, and some areas in the provinces of Samat Prakan, Ayutthaya, Pathum Thani, and Nakhon Pathom. Samut Prakan borders with Chonburi.

Something could change in Chonburi during Songkran, who knows.

he will have to make a decision to cancel or not.

Personally I don't want to cancel my trip but what would be a sure determining factor to cancel my trip? (closed airport or hostile people?

I was just expressing my opinion that unless you go looking for trouble you are unlikely to find any, based upon my experiences. I'm sure the OP is aware of the situation and just wanted opinions, which is what I offered.

I wouldn't cancel myself, I can't be any more sincere than that although, as I intimated in my first post, past experiences are no guarantee of future outcomes.

I think you'll be ok mate.

I guess theres two things. Your safety and impact on your holiday.

Unless your planning on filming the protests or visitng the majoy locations in BKK I don't think theres much danger of you being hurt in the protests.

However I did notice last month that the streets seem a bit more crazy and lawless. I think a combination of thailands economic woes and the police being focused on the red shirts has made the streets less safe.

Thailands still very safe, but its changed for the worse in the last few years and more so in the last month.

There will definatly be an impact on your holiday.

Last month they where stopping all the busses and searching them multiple times. I guess to make it harder for red shirts to come into down. But it played havoc with the traffic.

I'd also predict a lot of people leaving bkk for pattaya.

WHen i was there and this just started teh airport was flooded with tourists going home. i nearly missed my flight to the phillipines. When I came back the airport was very quiet.

So it will have effects across your holiday.

I suspect patts is going to be the best place to sit it out. You'll probably find tourist numbers low, but a lot of falangs and even thais from bkk have come down there to sit it out.

I guess the open question is "what if this one isn't peacefull like all the others". :(

Sadly thats teh gamble you take. For what its worth I think you'll be fine.

Thanks for your input and much appreciated! My only worry is landing safely and getting to Patts safely but once I'm in Patts I think I can rest peacefully knowing that It wasn't so bad and can continue my great adventure in Patts. I just hope it does'nt come to the point that it's not possible to land because of the civil unrest and airport closure ect! Lets pray for peace and harmony! Sly

I'm flying in on the 24th april. as long as the plane still leaves heathrow i'll be on it.

If it was me (I'm going May 8th so not as soon as you however have been giving the current situation serious thought) I would agree that if the plane can land in BKK than I'm damn well going :P.

Should the worst happen then out comes the credit card and I fly to PI instead and figure things out along the way!

I am landing on 19th about 9.30pm and taxi straight to pattaya. Been thru this sort of thing several times before (tho not at the airport when it was blockaded) and pattaya doesnt seem to be much affected. drop me a Pm next week if you like and I will tell you if I had any problems.

I arrived back two days ago and headed directly to Pattaya. There was/is no indication of any problem. Like with previous demonstrations tourists are not being directly targeting. Just stay away from the trouble areas and you will be fine.

Thank for all the tips but looks like I'll be heading to the Phillipines first. Landing on the 28th 2pm and heading to Manila just after midnight on same day. Booked through Cebu Airlines ($171.00cdn) one way to Manila and getting picked up and head straight to Angels city and staying at Pacific Breeze Hotel and hang around for at least 5 days and see what happens then. Will book a 0ne way flight from Clarks airport to Bangkok and hang around Patts for about a week if things are ok! The only reason why I'm able to do this is because of Pattaya Addicts and it's valuable informations on just about everything that a guy needs for a trip to paradise! I'll let you guy's know how this trip went if we do go. thanks all Sly

Ill be there the 25th so lets hook up. I am still planning to go. email me

BEER: HELPING UGLY PEOPLE HAVE SEX SINCE 3000 B.C.

I just checked on a ticket for a friend. The airlines are still selling tickets.

For May 2nd and every day around it. When I see they skip some days during the season, unless those dates are already sold out.

In 2006 I came to Pattaya 2 days after the army coup and there was no evidence of any unrest. I am in Pattaya now and apart from Songkran madness things are normal.

Pattaya is over 100kms from central Bangkok and the Airport about 30/40kms. Pattaya is a tourist resort/party town that is not usually affected by political unrest (apart from the ASEAN demos). Also this is a Thai vs Thai situation, and has not changed views on "Farangs", whether they like us or hate us.

The trouble in Bangkok has been going on for a month now, that's where the govt, that's where the Red shirts are. Unless you hear of trouble at the Airport, you should not encounter any problems.

I've been debating whether i should go or not cause i arrive on the 25th of this month, but i'm assuming that the airport will be safe and pattaya will be safe. hope its not too packed seeing how im sure a lot of people from bangkok will head there.

Flutternutter

A friend of mine was just asking me about this because I arrive in 3 weeks. I told him that the hardcore will always find a way there. As long as the airport is not closed down, I am arriving come hell or high water, red shirts or yellow shirts. This trip is 50 days, and I already got my 60 day visa.

I fly in at the end of the month no way will I change my plans. I will see ya'll there hell yeah!
