1 way Upgrade to Business Class

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I would like to hear your opinions.

With accumulated air miles plus paying a little extra, I can upgrade from coach to business class.

Since I don't have enough miles and am a cheap charlie and not wanting to pay too much extra, the upgrade will be for only one way.

The question is, do I upgrade for the flight to Thailand (I always land and get to Pattaya at 1am after about 35 hours of traveling), or on the way home, when I am feeling down and depressed?

Might be better on the way there so u can get maximum rest and not get hammered by jet lag. The way I see it, on your way home, your going to be depressed either way, so cattle class will just make your life all that more miserable, but you will already be in a bad state......so, theres your answer :GoldenSmile1:

I don't buy out the bar, I buy the nightspot.

I'd save the business class leg until the return journey. Save the best until last.

I'd say the flight back always seems longer, so use it then.

I would save it for a free flight, so there you have it 3 different answers. As they say in Thailand "UP TO YOU" Flying.gif

i am tempted to go for the upgrade on the way home.

on the way to thailand, i am usually so excited that it doesn't matter how i get there as long as i get there.

the thing that i was thinking about was that the upgrade (first time for me) would be one more thing to be excited about.

still undecided though

don't get it. it's not a question of money. i guess in a way it is, in that i don't want to spend an extra $5,000 for first class but will spend a few hundred for an upgrade.

thing is, when i am miserable (i.e. on the way home), nothing really will make me feel better.

What airline are you flying with. That can make a big difference in regards to the airport lounges.

never thought about the lounges. it will be with american airlines that in the past used japan airlines to get to tokyo.

Definitely go for the trip there. I flew coach and had a empty 747 to sprawl out on and still did not get a wink of sleep. Even though I had a whole row to my self the seat belt, stewardess telling me to fasten my seat belt, etc. It all kept me from sleeping.

On the return trip my body immediately shut down from lack of sleep, having a beer company in my blood stream and depression. I slept the whole trip from BKK to London.

I am a fat kid in a sweet shop, I just cannot choose and want it all.

are you driving home? After a 16 hour flight I probably shouldn't have driven home but still did.. maybe return journey is better as you are pretty much taken care of when you arrive?

what airline? some have 'premium' economy so you might be able to swing this on one of the legs.

A couple of thoughts . . .

On the way home, are you planning to leave the plane and head directly to the office? If so, you want to do it on the back end so you can get the big seat and take a shower at the transit point. If not, do it on the way there as it allows you to really break away from the norm and start the holiday on the right foot.

Other thoughts

Keep the miles pocketed and do a couple of short term mileage runs when your airline offers a double/triple mile deal. This will allow you to book bus class for the entire round trip the next time out. (You are going again, right???)

def going again (although it is hard enough waiting for this trip to be thinking of the one after, lol).

i am leaning to upgrading on the way there.

on the way home, i will be tired, depressed and i think i wouldn't enjoy the (hopefully) extra comforts of business class.

on my way there, i will be happy, excited and every little thing will be appreciated.

i will not be going to the office once i return, since i am self-employed, i may be able to squeeze a few days upon returning home to get over NOT REALLY being a "rich, sexy millionaire"

  • 2 weeks later...

If I have only enough miles to upgrade I always do it on the way home. Last October on the way home I flew first class BKK to DXB then business DXB to GLA then had the Emirates limo take me home from Glasgow made a horrible journey home fantastic.

Plus you get that quick passport control at BKK. From arriving at the airport to being in the Emirates lounge was 5 minutes maximum.

Ive just done the same thing upgraded 1 way with my airmiles and i picked my outbound so i can sleep on the flat bed and be fresh when i get there...doesnt really matter when you get back does it????

I flew over on Thai Air (great airline) from LAX to BKK twice nonstop Bus Class both ways. The trip over is 18 hours and the trip back was only 14 with tail wind. I can honestly say that the 14 hour trip was allot easier!

You may also check the airline reviews to see how the seats are ranked http://www.airlinequality.com/Product/Yseats-entry.htm this has lots of great info. Most US airlines are only 3 star as opposed to the asian airlines are 4 & 5. I believe you said somewhere you are flying American Airlines. Not sure if they have their 777s yet.

Hope this helps the confusion. :GoldenSmile1:

I join the Use It On the Way Home Legion, as I too am so pumped flying to LOS that they could stick me in the broom closet and I'd as happy as a clam. But that ride home is a real bummer. Save the best for last - best advice IMHO.

i have pretty much decided to upgrade on the way there.

not that it would matter if i was tired when i got there, because i am always sooo pumped up when we land, but because i want the added excitement of going "in style".

coming home well nothing will make me feal good.

i just hope that there is no civil war when i want to go in july / august.
