Pattaya Cough

chris2004

Recommended Posts

I've been living full time in Pattaya for about a year now but in the last six months i've developed a cough. Not too bad just a nagging cough which i can't seem to get rid of. Tried a few antibiotics but no change.

I've never smoked and never had any chest problems so I presume it's linked to living here. I guess the pollution doesn't help, especially the dust bowl in Jomtien where i live.

Any other BMs have the same problem and any suggested cures.

Go to the Ear, Nose and Throat specialists at Bangkok Pattaya Hospital – 2nd floor from memory.

I had the same thing, what sounds like it, and after seeing the normal doctors twice they then sent me to Ear, Nose and Throat specialists who then diagnosed me with a nose infection - drugs and a nasal spray and good to go after two weeks.

Yes a dry cough but I seem to get a lot of phelmg (spelling) in my throat and am constantly clearing my throat.

I get the same every trip to Thailand and haven't managed to pin down the exact cause yet...probably a combination of pollution, in and out of A/C environments and possibly water when showering / bathing.

sounds like the common CAT FLEW ( you know, eating the wrong pussy's). Buy some azithromax (I probably spelled that wrong). Six tabs in total, take 2 a day for 3 days.

Try doing all you possibly can to alleviate it.

I found that having my aircon thoroughly cleaned regularly (max every 2 months) helped a lot. It does seem that the mold in the aircon is (one of) the main causes so it makes sense. Anyone booking a hotel - try and ensure you dont get a room that has been vacant some time as the mold grows faster in unused units.

Use the "sleep" function on your aircon unit at night. This turns it on and off periodically to prevent to much dryness.

Always have a bowl of water on the floor in your bedroom - this prevents the air drying too much in aircon rooms.

Make sure you change your pillow cases frequently.

As a non smoker - avoid smoky environments (hard I know)

If you are riding a mocy - use a visor or wear a mask.

Al these things may be minor on their own but taking a little care usually helps.

Finally, if you tried anti-bio MAKE sure you used exactly as prescribed and completed the course. For example they wont work if you take them AFTER eating, you must take anti-n before meals (in most cases). If you didnt do this try a course of anti-b again but use as prescribed. Mnay people feel better after half a course so stop taking them. That wont work - it just comes back.

OP - did you use aircon in your home country? I would hazard a guess you probably did not.

I work on the railway our trains are all air conditioned now,so many new staff get sick and can`t do the job because of the air con.

Try switching it off for a few nights it might help.

i went through this shit before on Secrets.

rule number 1...................

don't smoke thai marlboro.

if you don't smoke and you have this problem go to home country doctor.

if you smoke, just buy L & M or 555's in the 7/11 when you can.

just never do thai marlboro, red or light !.

failing that you've probably got aids.

I got that cough when I went to BKK in November... well I spent 2 days in Pattaya too, but my regular BG in BKK had the cough while i was there. When I got home, it was just in time for our annual cedar pollen dowsing, and things got much worse... I'd cough until I almost puked! Went to the Dr and got antibiotics and it was almost gone by Feb, but I went back to Thailand and whammo there it was again. I was there a month and saw the original BG I think I got it from... she took her Rx to the pharmacy and got me all I needed... it was almost gone in a week and when I got home the cedar was gone, so after a couple of days I was good as new... and yes I do smoke my pipe.

Seemed to me on my second trip lots and lots of people were coughing. Just saying there's meds available if they get prescribed properly... my dosage was two of the big elliptical antibiotics a day, a lemony something she dissolved in water first thing each day and then two tiny pills a day I suppose were antihistamines.

Thanks for the suggestions guys (except jojo). I suspect the A/C has a lot to do with it so I'll try to limit its use.

Many folks who live in pattaya for a long time get the pattaya cough. I dont believe its air con related as I hardly ever use mine, 20 minutes to cool the room before bed and then turn it off. More likely the ever present pollution and dust in the air I suspect.

I have also tried a few different remedies without much success. However, when I find that it is settling on my chest I get Bisolvon tablets from the local pharmacy and this seems to clear up the chest congestion but the cough never seems to completely go away.

It's not the cough that will carry you off.

It's the coffin they carry you off in.

If you use A/C drape a wet towel over over a chair at night. I've done this and it's been dry in the morning so it goes to show how much the A/C sucks out the moisture in the air in your room. And clean the filters in the A/C unit. Drinking lime or lemon juice and sugar in hot water will sooth your throat.
