Best way to change money

Recommended Posts

Typically in the past I have used a mix of $100 dollar bills, AmExpress travelers checks, and credit cards to pay for my vacations. I usually only use the credit card for a big hotel bill or to buy an airline ticket. I usually start off by changing some travelers checks right inside the airport and then I just change my cash where it seems the most convenient. For my next trip to BKK, Phuket, and Pattaya April 5th-26th, I would like to try and approach my money exchange in a more educated way. So who out there can educate me? Where do you get the best rates for US dollars and for travelers checks? And which ends up being the better rate, for cash or check? Thanks.

I would like to know if you get same rate at the airport as you do in the business area ............(money changer)

In my travels around Asian airport rate can be 5-10 % less...........

off to the bank ...........:BJ1:

You get slightly less at the airport as you've mentioned......depending what time you arrive just change enough to get you to Patts.

what i do is,book hotels at home, agoda ect, internal flights, bangkokair website,so main bits of holiday are sorted

then allow say 5000 baht day cash, and have atm card on standby, tell the home bank you are going to thailand first,or it may be stopped, card fraud

happen to me ,not good ,ran out money,4 days no bar fines,

i will be trying the open a thai bank account route, next trip, lot people on here said it works fine,

i bring 2000 english pounds in twentys,only a small pile,put in pocket

i usally exchange a 100 pounds in swampy airport, for taxi and start up cash, beer

then go down the 5000 baht day cash flow budget

as hotels and flights are sorted allready

just beer girls food taxis to pay

with the new way ,a thai atm card,i can get to bangkok from swampy ,if green k bank open can exchange my english into a thai account,if not ,as late,do it next day, then draw from atms as and when i like,no 250 baht charge too, seems a good plan ,can have internet access too,on a foreign thai account,so access online ,when back home,or just spend the lot,go home broke, thats usally my way

english atm credit card on standby, for hospital or big screw ups,4000 pound limit on mine, get me out of the shit

well i found travlers cheuqes ,they charge for getting them, and charge for exchanging them, rip off ,both ways

atm charges on english cards ,rip off too

so cash and a thai bank account seems best way forward, the green k one seems the best,

well good luck

The best exchange rates for cash (American to baht)in Pattaya is at Bank Gold on Soi Rungland off Pattaya Tai (turn right on Soi after Third Rd heading East). Also Dollar Money Exchange on Soi L K Metro off Soi Dianna (opposite Champagne Agogo). Both places normally give at least a point higher than the normal bank exchange booths around town.

What ever you do, do not change money at the airport of departure, I can only share UK airport experiances, but they are extortinate, at lease 10 or 20 pence in thepoung worse. I guess it is the same the world over. The places in BKK arrivals are ok for changing enough to get by for the first day/night.

In Pattaya there was a place in Soi LK Metro near the Dianna end on the RHS which was a travel agent, they were only open during the day but offered a better than most rate.

I saw this on "UK Border Force". I think they said if you have over £2000 you need to prove it's yours using Bankstatements and a payslip or something like that. It's just to prove your not carrying money got through crimes.

My memory tells me £2k but the guy who said £10k my be right.

i know exactly what you mean about british airports but can confirm that the airport in

bangkok is a bit worse than most but no where near as bad as the british ones. so it is

well worth just changing a bit that you need for your taxi etc. the rate in bangkok

airport will certainly be better than any rate you will get in england. dont forget

england is the biggest rip off on gods earth... i see you are a scablifter, good to

see another forces lad on here.
