Army had set up at the airport this morning ( Tuesday ) when I arrived to fly out. Saw no sign of them when i arrived on the 5th March. So looks like its not over yet.

Arrived on 25th 12.30 & no sign of any army, even the 'barmy army;! Business as usual.

I did notice at passport control that the airport was hella-busy, mostly Chinese, Japanese, Russian & Arab tourists; around 25% families. As the racists might say, it was a case of 'spot the white man'.

Passport control was the usual efficient affair. 3 minutes per person X 20 people per queue = 1 hour wait!

Although a happier equation is 1 hour wait = infinite Thai pussy for the duration of! :GoldenSmile1:

Peace. :001_Thank_You5:

In my opinion next 7-10 days will be final. but i do have a bad feeling it is going to get little violent.

In personal view, what kind of retards attack the army? and how exactly are they going to blame the government for the response?

Following is one of the latest statements

"Troops will not be withdrawn from the Government House compound as demanded by red-shirt protesters, army spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd said on Saturday evening.

If necessary, soldiers will have to use measures controlling the crowd -- from soft to harsh, he said.

It is necessary for security units to maintain peace and order there because it is a government areas, Col Sansern said."

I think this is an indication of what is going to happen should Reds try to push more.

Of course Red leaders would not be there, while the paid mob will get hurt and the leaders will try to blame the government while it would be without a question 100% their fault.

I mean in what place on earth can people attack the army and just walk away with it.?

We also have to keep in mind, 'Saving face" especially when it comes to Thai Army and generals, i hope not, but i think its all about to explode.

Govt, reds edge towards talks

  • Published: 28/03/2010 at 11:46 AM

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva is ready to hold negotiations with representatives of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship, and his secretary-general Korbsak Sabhavasu is coordinating with the UDD to make the necessary arrangements, PM's Office Minister Sathit Wongnongtoey said in a televised statement on Sunday morning. The decision came as a large number of red-shirt protesters were massing outside the 11th Infantry Regiment camp where Mr Abhisit has been staying for the past two weeks since the rally began.

Ok boys good news and bad news

Good news first

Govt sets 9 pm as deadline for protesters to leave Rajprasong. Govt says occupying the intersection carries one-year imprisonment.

Bad news

Internal Security Act to be enfourced should Red Shirts fail to leave Ratchaprasong.

Could get bloody, there are also reports that the army has had enough and has 50000 troops in BKK to take action

The government has warned the red-shirt United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship to unblock the Ratchaprasong intersection by 9pm.

“The government will enforce the law reasonably and according to the international human rights standards…This intersection has been closed for several hours,’’ said Panithan Wattanayakorn, deputy secretary-general to the prime minister and acting government spokesman.

“We hope the [on going] negotiations will be successful. But if they are not, the government has no choices but to act according to the Internal Security Act,’’ he said at press conference held at the Centre for the Administration of Peace and Order (CAPO).

Well, you have 2 options1

1. Follow this thread or other sources to follow the developments

2. Do not go to BKK, but go straight to Pattaya from the airport.

One of the red leaders predicted the government may send security personnel to disperse the protesters at 3pm Sunday.

"If the government decides to fire its first bullet at the people the country will be left in dust as well," he warned.

UDD core member Natthawut Saikua called on the UDD supporters in different provinces to form guerilla forces at certain locations.

"If authorities use forces against the people the guerilla units could strike back at their own discretion," Mr Natthawut said

Bit of a worry

A bomb exploded in a car parked outside the Poseidon massage parlour on Sunday night, wounding one person, police said.

Police called to the scene shortly after midnight found a Toyota car with Chiang Mai licence plates was on fire.

The bomb shattered glass windows in the massage parlour building. A driver for the ;parlour, identified as Kongdech Namrana, 49, was injured.

Police were still unsure whether the car bomb has anything to do with politics. The massage parlour, on Ratchadaphisek Road, Din Daeng, is owned by the father of Commerce Minister Pornthiva Nakasai.

According to security guards there, a man in what looked like soldier's uniform parked the carthere. He refused to hand over the keys for valet parking.

The explosion occurred around midnight, they said.

Well, just to update those interested or following

In few words

"Keep the F away from BKK"

Today there has been some clashes with police, few more bombs and they are now spread over most of the city main areas.

Because of lack of action by the government, Reds have decided to go crazy and push more. While arrests warrants have been issued for 10 leaders.

PS. Few Bangkokians have driven their cars into red crowds

Avoid BKK if possible, Pattaya remains "red free" and safe

Oh bugger.

Anyone know if Sukhumvit is clear? All the reports I've seen talk of the Government and Commercial areas.

I'm flying in on Saturday night and booked to stay for two nights near Nana, then on to Pattaya. I had planned to stay in Bangkok on way out too so may miss that but would like to stay over the weekend after a long flight.

Did notice the quote from a French tourist on the Bangkok post saying the protests are quite calm compared to protests in France! Not sure if that says more about France than Thailand but I'm hoping that the reporting is the same as we get in London with the G8 protests etc it looks terrible but unless you are in the street involved you don't notice anything.

Any feedback on Sukhumvit would be appreciated.

Some parts of Sukhumvit are clear. Remember that PM's house is not far from there, so Reds can be found wondering anywhere really. Also never know their next move.

Today they have seized Parliament House and from local reports Army does not want to intervene.

Not sure if it means Army is changing sides or planning something.

situation is getting worse, more bombs and attacks.

Thanks Kuffki didn't realise about the PM's house being in the Sukhumvit area.

Found this map link on Trip Advisor and can see the PM's house marked.

http://maps.google.co.th/maps/ms?hl=en-GB&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=116480606892254086046.0004817fafbb87b0951c0&ll=13.745054,100.555286&spn=0.096879,0.151062&z=13

The protests look very close to Nana too.

I doubt there would be any violence or trouble pointed at tourists so feel OK safety wise but I really need to be confident about catching my flight out so I'm more concerned about the airport being closed again.

Maybe time to cancel and book later in the year.

PM house in Sukhumvit soi 31, i think its Thong lor, or just near by.

Today State of Emergency decree imposed in Bangkok.

So it will either explode or calm down

In my personal opinion, do not cancel your trip as most likely you will be penalised by the airline and hotel will try to keep some money.

Either first come to Pattaya and wait for the situation to clear up or alternatively change the hotels from Sukhumvit area to else where.

I also do not think foreigner will be targeted but there are more and more bombs and also Reds now started to "weaponise" getting ready to fight the army and police.

Should anyone by accident end up in the middle, they could be caught in the cross fire.

I am sure its not as bad as i make it out, but in this instances better be safe then sorry.

Thanks again Kuffki. I did ask about canceling my flight and hotels, would have cost a few hundred quid but reading the thread on Trip Advisor of all places I've decided that it's more a matter of a little inconvenience than outright disruption to tourists. So I'll be in Bangkok Saturday night then Pattaya on Monday for a couple of weeks. Never been to Pattaya so really looking forward to that!
