HIV % higher in parts of USA than Africa - sobering stats

From a Feb 2010 report in The New England Journal of Medicine:

http://content.nejm.org/cgi/content/full/NEJMp1000069

Some sobering, current stats:

For example, more than 1 in 30 adults in Washington, D.C., are HIV-infected — a prevalence higher than that reported in Ethiopia, Nigeria, or Rwanda.1 Certain U.S. subpopulations are particularly hard hit. In New York City, 1 in 40 blacks, 1 in 10 men who have sex with men, and 1 in 8 injection-drug users are HIV-infected, as are 1 in 16 black men in Washington, D.C.2 In several U.S. urban areas, the HIV prevalence among men who have sex with men is as high as 30%3 — as compared with a general-population prevalence of 7.8% in Kenya and 16.9% in South Africa.

And a fresh reminder to everyone to play safe...

Perfecting my ability to "let that which does not matter truly slide"

would need to compare major US cities with major African cities to make an accurate comparison

rates would always be higher in cities and the African stats are skewed to some extent as they take the population as a whole - both urban and rural

interesting reading nonetheless

This is the "2009" report HIV in the United Kingdom from the UK's Health Protection Agency, I think it's safe to assume seeing as they have up to the minute data from the NHS that it is more than just guess work.

HIV in the United Kingdom : 2009 Report It makes for very interesting and informative reading.

A few facts from the report,

There are an estimated 83,000 cases of HIV in the UK of whom 27% are unaware they are infected. That is equivalent to 1.3 people per 1000 of the population

44% of cases are in London.

During 2008 there were 7,298 new diagnoses of HIV in the UK

58% of people diagnosed in 2008 acquired their infection heterosexually.

It is estimated 49% acquired their infection in the UK and 51% from abroad.

Preliminary estimates for HIV-related life time costs to the NHS for diagnosed individuals range between £280,00 - £360,000.

I could give more examples however if anyone is interested in the facts best you read it yourself, together with the graphs and maps.
