One year ago I hired a motorbike driver to explore the darkside. It did cost me 600 Baht for four hours (including some non-alcoholic drinks and some pad thai). IMHO you don't really need to hire a driver, even at the dark side I could always find some idle guys. Maybe it makes (more) sense if you want him to be kind of a tour guide to "local places" for you...
