if it's a quad band and unlocked..you'll have no problems using it in Thailand. just pick up a Thai sim and you're good to go.

good present for your thai girl...for some reason cell phones are really expensive in thailand. Get her an Iphone and she'll really love you forever. The nokia 5800 looks kind of like an Iphone, so she'll be happy for awhile.

Because it has no Thai keyboard it's useless for sms but you can replace this by a Thai keyboard.
