Hey guys,

I love languages and I'll be in LOS for about six weeks. On my 3rd Pimlseur lesson at the moment. I've used the tapes before. Great for a basis.

It took me about four weeks to memorize the Japanese syllabary -- not the characters. Very useful. Any clue on how long it would take to memorize the Thai syllabary? I won't be there until late March.

I'm thinking just to make hanging out in Patts a bit more easier. Keep in mind that this is also a hobby. It's no stress for me to do this. But if it's useless then I'll concentrate my time on vocab.

Thanks,

GDT

You could easily learn all the Thai letters in a month. Unfortuneately learning how to construct words isn't as simple with vowels being after, before, above, below or even surrounding the consenant! If you tackle it it will in help all aspects of learning Thai.

Yeah, the Kanji is not exactly tough as much as loooong.

But nonetheless, I'm thinking now that maybe tackling vocab is probably the best way to go. Living there, sure, you need to read. Otherwise vocab should suffice.
