In the past when I have sent small items by International Airmail from Thailand to the UK the post office insisted that I use a one of their own Padded envelopes and not a plain brown one that I would normally use in the UK.

If I were to send a parcel (say 50x30x15cm) is there the same issue where I have to use special packaging or can I just send it in any old cardboard box?

Late reply, I just had similar experiences.

Cheapest way to send overseas short of 'surface', is SAL (SEA Air Land?). Several P.O. near Pattaya have told me that only goes for things below 2 kg, and only envelopes (like bubble envelopes) can be sealed, packages must be unsealed and tied with rope for customs.

In fact, they lie or are ignorant. SAL can take packages up to 20 or 30 kg. You need to go to the Thai Post website, look it up, put in the weight and country, print it out and take it to the P.O. Then they'll concede. SAL is about half the price of airmail.
