I will be in Pattaya for Christmas and New Year. And I'm thinking of going to Koh Samet with my girlfriend for about 3 nights in between Christmas and New Year.

I've not been to Koh Samet since 2000 so I'm sure it has changed a lot. So I was wondering if any Addicts can recomend a resort I can visit on the island. Also can anybody recomend a nice hotel or Bungalow complex on the island that I might like.

Going to the island will just be a spur of the moment sort of thing so I'm hoping that all the accomodation won't be fully booked.

After partying over christmas it will be nice to chill out on the island for a couple of nights before partying on NYE.

Any ideas will be much appreciated

"Silver sand" is good place to stay, 1200b per night, within walkin' distance from Saikaew beach.

also i posted a lot of info here

I love Samet, I always try to spend a couple of nights there whenever in Pattaya. I have not seen all of the island and resorts because when I first went there I ended up at White Sands. Now that is where I always make a bee line for. You can take the slow boat to Malibu resort and then het a taxi to White Sands or as I normally do you can barter over the price of a speed boat to drop you right there. If you take the speed boat they will try and walk you into some accomodation that they will have an interest in, I can't comment what that accomodation is like. I normally find my own. Generally I stay in a room above the shops in the lane that leads from the beach straight through to the town centre. The girl that runs the internet cafe and travel shop looks after these rooms. She has 2 with AC and hot water and 4 basic. Cant remember the rates sorry.

Beautiful place, spent my 50th birthday there on the beach 3/4am in the morning listening to the water, looking at the stars, feeling the breeze and a lovely lady by my side.

The last time I visited Koh Samet I stayed at the Malibu Resort. Looking at what theaus and robert wrote it might be worth visiting White Sands

I would suggest emailing a few places by searching on Google for Koh samet accommodation to see if they are booked up for then, if you email a few and get replies they are all full you will know the situ if not you can just go on your own steam and find a room when you arrive.

Its easy to get to ban pa I think is the port at Rayong, you can get a bus from Pattaya cheap or a cab at about 800 baht, dont get into conversation with the booking operators at the port as they take commission and try to sell you the expensive rooms, you don't need to book there, just get on the ferry 40 baht per person or the speedboat but about 1500 baht.

When you arrive on sakaow beach just walk along and look, its all close and the choice is yours as long as they have availability, we stayed at sakoew villa 2, nice room with A/C etc etc 1100 baht, maybe more now in high season.

I settled for the Jirawan hotel, 1500baht/night for seaside view on the main beach for falangs (other side of pier). The room wasn't great but as i was quoted 1500 for some beachside hovel upon my beachside roaming, i grabbed it. The 1200baht room in the back was the same size but facing backwards and i didn't even contemplate the 1000baht room.

What i don't regret paying for was the 800baht/person speedboat. This saved me the entrance fee unto the island (can't tell you how much this was because i didn't pay but could be as high as 500bahtfor me/100baht for her) and also saved the 150baht bus fee.

My last advice is if, like me, you are prone to mosquito's, wear trousers at night. I was bitten 25-30times one night on one foot, and 8 days later diagnosed with 'infected cellulitos' upon my return to the UK.

At the moment I'm thinking of geting a taxi from Pattaya to the port in Rayong. The gf knows a Pattaya taxi driver who will do us a good price. Once at the port I might get a speedboat to take me to the island. It's looking like I will get the speedboat to take me to silver sand but having said that I did have a good time at the Malibu resort the last time I went to Koh Samet in 2000.

I will be going to the island inbetween Christmas and New Year so my main concern is will there be decent accomodation available if I just turn up on the island on spec. I'm not too bothered about staying somewhere expensive but I also don't want to stay in a hovel.

Silver Sands is good value for 1200/night but i think you'll pay more for the christmas - new year period. Definitely book ahead, it's likely to be full. We stayed here last sun-mon because the fri-sat was fully booked out. The rooms are good enough with a/c, tv, and the beach is sheltered so good for a swim. I thought the food was good but the Thais thought it was nicer at Jep's up the road.

We paid 1200 for a 1 way speedboat for 6 of us but 5 of them were Thai so maybe we got a fair price. The speedboat drops you on the beach outside the resort so you might dodge the 200b farang entry fee if there's no officers patrolling the beaches, they do it more on weekends when it's busy. Thais pay 40b entry fee. The ferry takes 45mins and costs 50b.

I just recently returned from Koh Samet and also stayed at Silver Sands, the rate was 1200 during the week and 1500 on w/ends, this was during off season. Rooms were nice enough but basic your not going to get the same value as Pattaya.

Great seafood restaurant next door Seabreeze or something close to that name, ate there a few times.

Getting to KS we used a travel agent in soi7 near 2nd rd, cant remember if we paid 300 or 600 return each....too many beers. This included pick-up from your hotel, mini bus to ban phe, ferry across and entrance fee.

I thought it was good value.

I'm arriving in Pattaya on the 17th December and me and the gf are thinking off going to Koh Samet on the 26th December for 3 nights. As I'm planning to go to Koh Samet during a peak time for thai tourism I might call into one or two travel agents in Pattaya and ask them for prices and availabilty. And if they offer a good price I might book with them. This might be better than just going to the island and trying to get something on spec

Good idea you dont want to sleep on the beach

Kel-Jay you have a great trip as well. I'll be spending a lot of time in my favourite bar Palmers(Soi 13/4) during my trip so feel free to call in for a beer. Plus I might meet up with a few fellow bm's during my trip

just went there for 3 days, stayed at sai kaew beach resort, good hotel etc, even though a little expensive, most the night action seemed to centre around the ploy bar.
