The Pattaya cough

Be careful out there guys as there’s lots of people coughing around town.

I’ve been wiped out in bed for the last 4 days and I’m still not over it.

Sore throats and flu like symptoms.

Cheers

But as we keep telling our whippets here in the damp and dismal North of England:

It's not the cough that carries you off

It's the coffin they carry you off in.

When using aircon at night, try putting a class or water in the corner of the room, to put moisture back in the air. It should be half empty by the morning!

The disadvantage of using AC, is that it is not only to cool the room that it is used in, but it also removes the moisture from the air in the room. Therefore, if you are someone that sleeps with their mouth open and snores, then there is a greater risk of you developing a sore throat or cough.

The reason that the sore throat or cough may develop, is that your mouth or sinus cavity dry out much faster, leading to an irritation in those areas. To help ease the effects of a sore throat, then gargling in warm salt water upto 6 times in 1 day will help soothe the irritation.

Of course all this precludes influenza, HINI, pot and fags ... or TB

Go get it checked, before ya infect everyone and land up in ICU

I got the cough and some sore through about 2 days ago, even with a slight pain in the chest.

Went immediately to our company clinic, where they gave me around 1/2 kilo (about 1 pound) of nicely colored, assorted pills. It seems that the medication helps and I feel better now.

My advise: Once you sense the first symptoms, do not to wait too long and see a doctor ASAP, so you can cure it before it gets really nasty.

I don't think a glass of water will make much difference (not enough surface area). Try a couple of large wet towels hung in front of a fan or the AC unit.

Another tip to avoid sore throath is not drink cold drinks with ice in hot weather, sine this will probably give a sore throat because of temperature difference (body and drink). Which could be a reason to the cough... This can again evolve to other things like fever. Soo when you see symptoms like this please go to the doctor as soon as possible...

I caught a real nasty cough on the last day of my last trip, I'm glad I caught it when I did because it wiped me out for about 3 days after I got home.

I go to the LOS for three month visits and like my aircon. I always get a cold and sore throat every time without fail. I'm OK back in the cold wet UK.

I was in Patts from 11 to 26 November. Somewhere around the 19th, I developed a very sore throat which quickly led to sneezing and runny nose/eyes, which after a couple of days became a bad cough.

I was about 3 days away from flying home and I did not want to have sinus congestion in the pressurised cabin - can be very painful. So I went to see the pharmacist next to Tim's on 2nd Road. She gave me Rocitro and D-Coate.

I took some of these tablets before going to bed. I woke up at about 4am and my head was spinning. There was no way I could stand up and it was disorienting just turning over. Fortunately, the feeling gradually wore off. The culprit is likely to have been the D-Coate as a search on the Internet lists dizziness as a potential side-effect.

Still haven't shaken off the bloody cough!!

my advice:

try to avoid bringing back to your room a lady stupid enough to put the aircon on 18 degrees, while you sleeping.

i thought i woke up in a freezer on that day. :Chokdee:

The cooling coil in an airconditioner is a breeding ground for mold & Bacteria. The ones I saw in Patts last trip never get cleaned. You need to mix in cleaner air from outside to dilute the dirty air from the Aircon.

Creating humidity will not cut down on the counts of pollutant in the air you are breathing. The best is if you can treat the air with UVC like what is found at steril-zone.com but that may not be that easy in Pattaya.

Remember that with any virus or bacteria, you need to take in a concentration sufficient to seat and grow in your body in order for you to be affected. The key is lowering that concentration exposure.

Back from UK ist Nov and 3 days later real bad throat infection - Amoxycillin and Tylenol and a gallon of Lysterine later, the throat subsided but then flu like symptoms set in and floored me. Masses of pill and 3 weeks later it's just about clearing off my chest - I think - but still coughing.

No aircon at night here and haven't had a shag for ....... can't remember - 3+ weeks probably - saved a fortune.

I've had a real chesty cough for a while now that produces a lot of phlegm. Can't seem to shake it off at all. I'm wondering if all the smog in Patts recently has anything to do with it. Looking out the window this morning the vis was much less than 1Km.

Well 'gogodog" here it is a year after your posting and I'm wondering the same thing. Over the past week or more the air pollution is really bad! It reminds me all too much of the years I spent in China. That's one of the main reasons why I left the place.

Everyday I look out over Patts from my high floor balcony in View Talay 2 in Jomtien and I can kinda see the cityscape...but I can't see Ko Larn island at all !

Frankly it's really starting to get to me. No sunshine getting thru and it's getting dark by 5 o'clock. No more sitting on my balcony and watching a beautiful sunset. It's an absolute bummer!

The reason I'm posting this is because I'm hoping someone can tell me WHY we're having all this pollution...and why for so long.

I remember having it in 2009 also but it cleared up in a few days because the farmers had stopped burning off their fields. This year is seems as if it's just going to keep hanging in the air. What's even more odd is the fact that this year we've been having some pretty good breezes...but the damn pollution just continues to look the same every day.

I'm staying indoors more now 'cause I really don't wanna go out into it.

So, anyone out there have any verified answers as to why Patts air is so POLLUTED ?

My friend developed a very sore throat on our last trip. He started to feel sick after about 1½ week and after 2 weeks he couldn't swallow anymore. I took him to see a doctor and he got 3-4 medications and after 2 days he was feeling better than ever.

The thing is that we lived together and did the same things so I guess he is more sensitive than me.

About the AC, I have learned from experience not to put it on 16 degrees C just before getting to bed. That equals 100% sore throat/cold/bad cough the next morning. :P

I guess this might be what I ended up with, had a sore throat for a day or two then had absolutly no energy. A nice girl called Mod I think from a bar few places up from where I was staying on LK Metro tried Lipo and everything to get me the energy to bf her. Ended up I just went home alone and was comatose for nest few hours. Next day runny nose and cough, went to 7/11 family mart or whatever they are called and got tablets. Then spent rest of evening sitting on a sofa on teh Billabong with a lady friend looking after me by cooling me off with a wet cloth every two minutes. After a while of this went for a walk, got as far as the bar next to the Devils Den and spoke to a future BF completely wiped off my head before eventually giving in and going to bed. Only lasted few days as on my last full day I was fine.
