Thai-Farang wedding ceremony?

Recommended Posts

I know there are many Farangs who have married Isaan girls. But what sort of wedding ceremony typically takes place? I'm not planning on getting hitched to an Isaan girl myself, right now, but would be interested to know what the Thai culture is and how this works for a Thai-Farang couple. I'm not so interested in the ceremonies that may take place in Europe/USA (I suppose often there is a second wedding back home), more how Thai-Farang couples have actually entered into and celebrated wedlock (now there's a word!) in Isaan.

I had 2 wedding ceremonies. I had a farang style wedding ceremony in my home country with the ceremony and then full reception.

In Thailand, I mixed the best of both worlds and had a traditional Buddhist ceremony followed by a western style reception. I didnt have it in the village, I did it all at a resort and found the traditional aspects worked quite well.

The wedding didnt last a week as such, but the day was relatively long. We had 2 ceremonies in the morning. The first with 9 monks and then we had the Khan Mark ceremony which is the less formal part of the traditional ceremony. It all depends on how much detail you want to go into, we did the whole 9 yards, I just figured, if I want to do it, do it the right way.

The Thai's adapted quite well with the western ceremony.

I don't buy out the bar, I buy the nightspot.

I went to a Thai reception last week. It involved eating and drinking coupled with a private karaoke which arched up once people had enough drink in them. There were lots of lovely Thai nurses there...:)

Most of the Thai weddings I have been to have been informal and fun affairs back in the ladies village. Lots of food and drink in the open air. They tend to start pretty early and at one BM's wedding I attended a Thai man fell over through being drunk by about 8 in the morning!

Sometimes they will have an early morning service at the village temple and then a reception in a local hall with Thai singers and dancers. Here is a link to a story I wrote about a friends wedding in Thailand. Wedding Of The Millennium

9 monks - that certainly is the whole 9 yards!
