I am new to this board but not new to Thailand. I thought I would add some thoughts on hotels I have stayed at recently.

BKK

The Davis hotel

Amazing Room and as usual was upgraded at no extra cost. I have read on different sites that this is a common practice so I am hoping that is again the case in June. No issues with taking a girl to the room.

The Metropolitan Bangkok

Wow, the service, room and everything was great. A litttle on the high side but still worth it. No joiner fees. I even took two girls on one night. Not a single stare from the front desk. I think this was due to the fact that I treated the staff like they friends.

Amari Boulevard

Not a bad place. No joiner fees.

Grande President

Nice room and very nice staff. I guess I am getting lucky with the hotels I choose as I was able to take a few girls to the room with only a hello Mr. ***** how are you doing tonight.

Zenith hotel

I could take it or leave it. Not all that impressed. But not having issues with taking a guest is always a good thing.

I must add that even though I have not had any issues with taking a girl to the rooms at these hotels that if any newbie feels that he should want the added security of giving the girls ID to the desk then by all means walk right up to the desk as if you know they are going to require it. I think the staff will get the hint and do the dirty work for you.

The Davis has been my Bangkok hotel of choice for about 12 months now.

I have stayed there about 10 trips / 25 nights, in both the main section & the corner wing, had a number of freebie upgrades including the suite with jacuzzi & sauna at no extra cost.

Here's a few pix i took last month in one of the smaller corner wing rooms, i like the window wall between bathroom & bedroom..

The Zenith is the least expensive at around $60 US. The other range from $80 to $150 US. I am only able to hit Thailand 2-3 times a year so I tend to stay in nicer hotels which offer some very relaxing rooms when I am in Bangkok. I am heading to Samui in June and will be staying at an amazing little place called Lamai Wanta in Lamai which has some very nice rooms for $28 US a night. This is located right near the R-Bar which is run by a great guy named Woodie. He is from the UK and really knows how to treat his customers.

You sure about Amari Boulevard? I've heard they have joiner fees by numerous punters.

I can only speak for myself. I have been to Thailand 6 times now and the only time I had to pay a joiner fee was at The Andaman Beach Suites in Phuket. I always book double. Not sure if that makes a difference. I have also read where some people pay a joiner fee where others have not. Anyone who has been to Thailand knows that one guy can walk by the front desk with three girls and not get so much as a look but then the next guy brings in one woman and he is immediately escorted to the front desk. Not sure how the staff selects those that will pay. I have seen all walks of life get various types of treatment.

Got it thanks...To my knowledge all Amari's are not guest friendly, however you booked a double. You can get out of any joiner fee pretty much that way. But for the most part you will have to pay more.

You are right in that you will pay more if you book double but you are only talking maybe 200 baht more that if you booked single. I just did a comparison on the hotels I have stayed at and most of them do not have any additional costs on whether it is a single or double. I guess they figure that for the most part there will atleast two people in most rooms.

Yes my point is that if you have to pay extra for a person, though cheaper than a joiner fee, you are still paying extra for a room which probably has a double bed already. If you have no issue paying 200 B more than the same can be said for 300-600. I don't pay it strictly for the reasoning of why should you pay extra for a country whose main tourist drive is p4p.

I heard from a merchant seaman that if you go to a hotel where working people stay, you get a dirt cheap room and the manager will get you anything. And I really mean anything!

I just priced three different hotels and it looks as though there is absolutely no price difference between a single and a double room. It is nothing more that how they label the booking. And as far as saying that paying an extra 300-600 is the same as paying 200 extra for a room per night well I do have some limits and 200 is it.

In my trips to Thailand and researching and pricing hotels, numerous times there are a difference in a double and a single. Of course there are places that don't have one. If you are investigated places like Majestic Suites or Swiss Grottino than there is no difference. Other than at Majestics if you pay for a double you get two breakfast tickets versus booking a single and getting one. YMMV
