Pollution of the water at Pattaya / Jomtien Beach

Recommended Posts

So I've been out for a swim at Jomtien Beach a couple of months back and swallowed alot of water after a couple of unexpected waves. One hour later I started getting sick and ended up at the hospital puking out everything I possibly could. This absolutely must have been because of the water. However I've been taking swims every week at Pattaya Beach and have never been ill or have had any skin problems because of it again.

People are telling me the water is polluted all the time, saying they would never jump in over here... A guy told me his wife got problems with her skin because of the water here. I also read that 10,000 cubic meters of raw sewage flow into the water along Pattaya beach each day.

So what do you all have to say about the water quality? Should I stop swimming here? Links to some recent articles about it would be best, I can't find them.

Probably the much-feared 'Pattaya Brown Trout' - plenty about !

lol that's funny, I also read large schools of dead fish were found on Pattaya beach... Of course I believe large amounts of jellyfish are a sign of pollution isn't it? They have quite a sting!

These articles were over 10 years old though so I still wonder what the water is like now...

There should not be any problems now. I haven't had a piss in the sea since June.

Pollution of Thai beaches compared

Pattaya shouldn't be to bad nowadays, according to this article Jomtien beach is the most polluted one of Thailand in contrary to what many people tell you!

That article is a real eye opener, thanks for linking to it.....I will be getting a place with a decent pool now definitely....I don't want to risk my health just to go for a swim.

A big surprise is that Jomthien Beach was found to the worst among the 14 beaches, getting only two stars.

Jomthien's low ranking is in contrast to the general public's belief that the beach is relatively cleaner than nearby Pattaya beach in terms of seawater quality.

Such a disclosure should disturb many local visitors who tell people they dare not risk swimming in Pattaya, but would prefer to drive to nearby Jomthien.

interesting article that, im surprised to see pattaya is cleaner than jomtien beach aswell. to be honest i was shocked at the state of pattaya beach when i was last there in april.i know it was just after songkhran and that but i couldnt beleive the state of it, covered in so much litter and plastic bags etc i dont think i could see any sand.the sad thing is all the litter was just left there untill it got washed out to see damaging marine life and the environment too :GoldenSmile1: thats a good point aswell midge, i saw an article in a newspaper here about how swimming pools at hotels etc in europe are pretty poor and not as clean as people think.either not cleaned enough or cleaned at all.

Go have a couple of beers or 7 at PBG and watch the sewage discharge into the ocean from the pump station...

I dare you to ever swim in Pattaya again...
