In the next couple of weeks I am looking at buying a new laptop.

40 - 50,000 baht is my budget. I now the basics about computers but I am not an expert.

I would like to get some feedback on what is good value etc.

I do a little bit of photo editing and I at some stage would like to do some video stuff if I can fine the time.

I will be getting a couple of hundred mb of movies in the next week or so and they are in a format this is only watchable on a comuter. At least till we change them.

I may want to plugthe laptop into a TV if possible.

80% of the time it will be word, Excel, internet & emailing.

Cheers Guys

I am a big supporter of Dell (Latitude)...their customer service is top notch. I have about 275 of these installed in my customer base and have been very pleased.

Most all laptops now come with dual core processors, which will be fine for e ventual upgrade to Vista if you are not immediately inclined to take the jump.

However, make sure the laptop has at least 2 GB of RAM and has a 128 MD video card. It sounds like you will need it with your future hobbies.

You also may want to upgrade the hard drive, depending on how many videos you plan on storing...but I find the 60-80 GB drives more than adequate. You can also buy an external USB drive down the road (very inexpesive!) should you run tight on space.

Good Luck and fell free to PM me if you have any other questions.

dell is ok, but not as sturdy as a IBM

IBM also has great on-line support for upgrading the drivers

I dropped a DELL from a table top once and it was completely fucked, screen was gone, hard drive gone, and the USB ports were smashed in, it cost 20k Baht to repair it, could have bought a new one almost

I've seen others abuse IBM w/o trouble, even spilled a beer (16oz.) into the keyboard of one and it still survived

That all determines on the warranty you purchase...Dell offers the same coverage.

I just would not buy HP...been through two of the bastards in 3 years. Unfortunately, we are a re-seller and I am now getting my third POS.

One thing I would do is to put the maximum amount of RAM you can into your new laptop.

My new Toshiba came with 512 but I immediately doubled that and will at some point increase that to the maximum 2Gb.
