An Inverness woman who was mugged in Thailand a week ago has died in a Bangkok hospital.

Lydia Riach was to be cremated at a Thai temple after being pronounced dead on Sunday evening.

The 58-year-old suffered a serious head injury when she was attacked by a motorbike snatch team who grabbed her handbag and pulled her to the ground. Her husband Douglas Riach will be returning home to Scotland with her ashes on Friday. Her death means that Thai police are now involved in a murder hunt. No suspects have been arrested but spokesman for Thai Police said: "We have a witness and leads. We will apprehend the killers."

The couple was on their way to watch football at a bar owned by an expatriate Scot.

Customers at the bar have been giving to a fund to help pay for hospital costs. Mrs Riach gave up her job at Tesco's Inshes store in Inverness about a year ago to join her husband of 30 years in Thailand.

The couple decided to start a new life in South East Asia after Mr Riach was offered a job with a financial company in Bangkok.

He said: "This has not changed my view of Thailand and Thai people who have been very kind to us both. It could happen in other cities."

Mrs Riach had been due to start work in an orphanage helping underprivileged children.

That is just sad... on so many levels.
