Tourist Police round-up Cambodian Street beggars.

Pattaya, August 29 [PATTAYA ONE NEWS] : The Pattaya Tourist Police receive constant complaints from tourists regarding street beggars who number in their thousands here in Pattaya. It is known that groups of Cambodian beggars are controlled by Thai’s and work on their behalf by selling flowers, photographs and young children will often be used to sell chewing gum or will simply beg tourists for money. Although most of the Cambodian street beggars are illegally in Thailand, it is easy for them to enter Thailand at certain border crossings, therefore when they are deported they will often come straight back. Despite this problem, the Tourist Police conducted an operation on Friday to rid the streets of as many Cambodian street beggars as they could and they begun by staking out a number of locations while it was still light so they could target specific locations during the night which they knew would lead to many arrests. The operation was a success and a total of 50 people, the majority of which were Cambodian Nationals who did not possess passports or work permits, were arrested. They will be deported but are likely to return to Thailand to continue their illegal activities.
