Noordin shot dead in Indonesia: report

8th August 2009, 9:00 WST

Indonesian police sources say one of two men killed in a central Java shoot-out with police is Indonesia's most wanted terrorist, Noordin Mohammed Top.

Police hunting the mastermind of last month's attacks on hotels in the capital raided two houses on Saturday, killing two suspected militants, arresting five others and seizing explosives and a car bomb, a senior officer said.

A police source said he was shot dead during the raid in the province of Temanggung, in central Java, and they were trying to identify the body, ABC news online reports.

The developments appeared to be the first major break in the investigations into the attacks, which killed nine people and broke a four-year gap in terror strikes in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation.

Noordin is suspected in all of Indonesia's major terror attacks since 2002, including blasts on the resort island of Bali in 2002 that killed 202 people, most of them foreign tourists, including 88 Australians.

One raid took place close to the capital, Jakarta, early Saturday.

Police chief General Bambang Hendarso Danuri said two suspected militants holding bombs were killed, while three were arrested.

He said officers seized explosives and a car bomb that was intended for "a specific target" but gave no more details.

He said suspected booby traps remained in the house.

Meanwhile, officers slowly encircled an isolated house in a village in Temanggung where they said between three and four other militants loyal to Mohammed were holed up.

After a 10-hour siege in which the militants and police exchanged gun fire, a loud explosion was heard at the house as dawn broke.

Minutes later, officers sent remote control robots into the house to search for bombs, a witness in the village said.

Danuri said two suspected militants were arrested there.

Noordin is a Malaysian citizen who claimed in a video in 2005 to be al-Qaeda's representative in Southeast Asia and to be carrying out attacks on Western civilians to avenge Muslim deaths in Afghanistan.

Nope, he is giving thanks to Allah and having his cock cleaned every day by a thousand virgins...

72 virgins.. although the figure does go as high as 100 or so, depending on interpretation. It seems to vary depending how much motivation these fuckwits need to kill themselves.

A little chlorine in the gene pool works for me.

They should go in the desert and recite the Koran, facing Mecca of course. That way when they blow themselves up there wont be any of those vile infidels around to interrupt as they commune with Allah... pieces at a time.

I hope he has his virgins.

Having to deal with 72 women for eternity would be bad enough... but VIRGINS!

MY GOD... THAT SOUNDS LIKE HELL!

If you have ever taken a virgins flower you know it is usually for them a painful and downright unpleasant first sexual act. LOTS of fun... NOT! Geez... 72 times?!?

72 uptight, inexperienced and basically useless women that he has to train.

... and by the time they became of any use to him, they would probably be carpet munching each other and not let him join in.

... because he has given one of them the clap and has since passed it on to the rest of them, they are pissed at him now and wont let him join in ANY of the festivities.

That's my wish for his gift from Allah... eternal VD and having to watch 72 women screwing each other stupid and not be able to join in. :D

...mumble... bloody organised religions...mumble... :D

Terror suspect Top isn't dead: expert19:08 AEST Mon Aug 10 2009

The man killed in a recent raid in Indonesia may not be suspected terrorist Noordin Mohammed Top.

Terrorist leader Noordin Mohammed Top may have cheated death or capture once more but he's likely to be caught by Indonesian police soon, a leading expert says.

Rohan Gunaratna, head of the Singapore-based International Centre for Political Violence and Terrorism Research, says he's certain the man killed in a violent counter-terrorism raid on a house in Central Java at the weekend was not Noordin.

"It is not the body of Noordin M Top," Gunaratna told AAP, citing talks with sources close to the investigation.

"People who have seen Noordin M Top have identified that body as not belonging to him."

His comments came as fingerprint analysis reportedly confirmed that the body is not that of the Malaysia-born extremist.

Officially, police say they are still waiting on DNA tests to confirm if the body belongs to Noordin, who they have been hunting for the past six years.

"It's not him. We know from his facial structure as well as his fingerprints," an unnamed counter-terror police officer said on Monday.

"We're continuing to track his whereabouts."

Noordin, who leads a hardline splinter group of terror outfit Jemaah Islamiah, is the suspected mastermind of last month's attacks on the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels in Jakarta that killed nine, including three Australians and two bombers.

Authorities believe he was also responsible for a 2003 attack on the Marriott, a 2004 attack on Australia's embassy in Jakarta and the 2005 Bali bombings.

Police have come close to catching him several times but he has always managed to elude capture.

Nonetheless, Gunaratna believes police will catch him soon.

"Noordin M Top has been the key target of the Indonesian police and intelligence services since 2003 but not enough effort went into neutralising this target.

"I believe the attacks against the Ritz-Carlton and JW Marriott hotels last month will be the catalyst for Indonesia to find him.

"So I believe that in the next few months he will be neutralised."

There is some speculation the mystery body may be that of Noordin's father-in-law, Central Java preacher Bahrudin Latif, who has also been on the run.

The normally reliable Indonesian news website Detik.com on Monday said police sources now believed the dead man was Latif, alias Baridin.

"He has Baridin-like characteristics, but we will await DNA results," one unnamed source was quoted as saying.

It's believed Noordin may have escaped from the farmhouse just hours before police surrounded it on Friday.

Terror mastermind Noordin Top killed in raid

UPDATE: Indonesian police have confirmed that Malaysian terror mastermind Noordin Mohammed Top is among four people killed in a raid in Central Java.

The 41-year-old Malaysian-born extremist was one of four militants killed in the raid near Solo, national police chief Bambang Hendarso Danuri told reporters.

The terrorist, who was on the run for almost seven years, was identified using fingerprint analysis, Mr Danuri said.

“He is Noordin M. Top,” Mr Danuri said, sparking a round of applause throughout the room.

Indonesia authorities have previously claimed to have caught or killed the man believed to have masterminded the 2003 attack on the Marriott hotel in Jakarta that killed 12 people, as well as the 2004 bombing of the Australian embassy and 2005 attacks on tourist restaurants on the holiday island of Bali.

Most recently he was said to have been killed in an anti-terror raid, but DNA later revealed it was not him.

Reports earlier today said that five people had been killed when Armed Indonesian police stormed an Islamic militant hideout.

Loud explosions and gunfire were heard as police raided the house around 7am after a nine-hour siege on the outskirts of Solo city, a stronghold in Central Java of the Jemaah Islamiyah radical network.

Initial reports said four of five bodies had been identified but the fifth had been decapitated.

Police spokesman Nanan Soekarna refused to say who was suspected to have been killed but said the bodies were being sent to the capital Jakarta for identification.

“It’s true that police took action against seven suspected members of a terrorist group,” suspected of involvement in deadly July hotel bombings in Jakarta, Soekarna said.

“Four were killed and one person at the scene, the woman, survived and is being treated at a hospital in Solo,” Soekarna said.

Police found a cache of grenades in the house as well as eight sacks of explosives, he said.

Two other suspects were arrested before the raid including a suspected militant identified as Rohmat, he said.

A police intelligence officer at the site of the raid said those killed included the renter of the home, Susilo, close Noordin associate Bagus Budi Pranoto, alias Urwah, and suspected bomb-maker Maruto.

Noordin, a 41-year-old Malaysian who was south-east Asia’s most-wanted man, led a radical splinter faction of JI blamed for a string of deadly attacks.

Noordin led al-Qaida in the Malay Archipelago and was suspected of being behind the July 17 suicide attacks on Jakarta’s JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels.

The bombings, which killed seven people including six foreigners, were the first major attacks in Indonesia in nearly four years.

Police believed they narrowly missed Noordin in a dramatic televised raid in August on a safehouse in Temanggung, Central Java.

Noordin was initially reported dead at the end of the 17-hour siege but the body later turned out to be that of a florist working in the Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotel complex who helped plot the attacks from the inside.

If officially confirmed by police, the death of Urwah and Maruto would constitute the loss of key members of Noordin’s network, analyst Noor Huda Ismail said.

“Maruto is the guy who knows how to make bombs,” said Ismail, who heads the Institute for International Peacebuilding.

“Urwah is the guy who knows recruitment. He is the guy who introduced Noordin to Mohammed Rais,” he said, referring to an operative in the 2004 bombing of the Australian embassy in Jakarta.

A neighbour, Amal, said the raided house had been rented by the dead man Susilo and his wife Putri Munaroh, who was six months pregnant. “Susilo was a nice guy, he moved here six months ago,” he said.
