I got an SMS last night saying they would close for a short time at 3am and then re-open ...they knew it was coming

So what exactly is a "class 1 drug?' Is class 1 the most serious or the least serious?

Maybe Butterflyman thought somebody was smoking

This is now the third thread where Butterflyman is getting abused. It just goes to show, Sanctimony has it's own rewards.

The new Insomnia has been very successful and is highly visible and I guess a lot of people don't like that.

It has got raided twice within 4 months? I wonder how many times it got raided when it was much smaller and operating in a side street away from Walking Street.

Before the new Insomnia, when places like Marine 1, Lucifer and Tonys closed then the crowds would go on to a number of different places like Marine 2, Mixx and Tonys 2 (Europa club).

Now?....most of them go to Insomnia. Even earlier on in the night the people who used to go to Marine 1, Lucifer and Tonys are now going straight to Insomnia instead because is it much bigger and more visible than the old Insomnia. In fact it is pretty impossible not to see it with its high profile position on Walking Street. Insomnia has now turned into an all night sort of place and not just somewhere you go to when the other nightclubs have closed.

The last time I visited Pattaya a couple of months ago, the Crystal room at Mixx which plays the same sort of music as Insomnia was almost completely empty, Marine 2 which a year or so ago had become popular and crowded once again was now back to the bad old days where only a few people were in it, and as for Tonys 2?....that had completely closed.

It is fair to say that the new Insomnia has resulted in some reduction of choice. Before when the go go bars and the main nightclubs closed then you could go to a number of different places including a few other 'late night' night clubs, Soi 7/8, beer bars in and around Walking Street and even Soi 7/8.

Now the business for all of these places has fallen dramatically. This is mainly due the recession and other negative impacts that have happened to tourism but clearly some of the custom for these places is now going straight to Insomnia.

You have a newish, large place which is packed every night whereas traditional places like Soi 7 and 8 see hardly any customers after 4am.

Would you prefer just one large place as the place to go late at night or a few other places which were equally busy? Before you had more choice in terms of happening places to go and that made things more interesting.

Yes, Insomnia is a massive place....but not with well over 500 people crammed in to it.

It is not Insomnia's fault. There was a gap in the market for a large well run late night club. If there were a couple more like it then the problem of choice wouldn't arise.

The owners of the nightclub wanted an Ibiza style club where people would go particularly for the music, the atmosphere, the lighting effects....and not just because it is a freelancer hangout. In fact many guys go there specifically to dance rather than to pick up women.

The music played there is the sort that sounds even better if you are on something....which brings up the drugs issue.

There have been drug dealing purges in the past and one thing that the Thai authorities do no tolerate is the taking of drugs. They will turn a blind eye to most other things....late night opening, prostitution, even under aged sex, etc but not to drugs.

It is unthinkable that 500+ people are going to a place like Insomnia every night without a few taking drugs. So, Insomnia will stay open and keep on paying lots of 'tea money' for the authorities to overlook the fact that it operates past the legal hours but expect raids like these to keep on occuring. The authorities want to keep a handle on the drugs issue and don't want the same sort of situation like Ibiza occuring where drug dealing is openly taking place in nightclubs and on the streets.
