Other day a girl I was chatting with online typed วันนี่ไปช็อปปิ้ง - wan nee bi shorpbing (today i'm going shopping). I read it quickly and thought it read "today i'm going to buy a bbq (ซื้อปิ้ง sur bping).. until later on in the conversation when she corrected me which made me laugh.

 

Anyway, know any other good loanwords? When I first starting learning thai I developed an aversion to them which I know now was a bit silly, if thai people use them then why complicate things further. They're real useful I find as they almost instantly stick, heres a couple new ones to me I've found after checking:

 

Slang - สแลง - sa laaeng

 

Gorilla - กอริลลา - gor-ril-aa

 

Captain - กับตัน - cap-tan

Hello - ฮัลโหล - Hah-loh used when answering the phone

My sister in law was saying to me (as I was driving) "Lio, lio"...... so I went to turn right and she shouted"LIO, LIO!" and gestured to U-turn. I asked her why she didn't say "U-turn" and she replied that she thought "lio"would be better as she didn't think I'd know what "U-turn" meant!!!!!!
