Eye scanner focus on HIV

An eye scanner developed in WA promises to become a cheap, mass screening tool for HIV/AIDS in Third World countries where the disease is carried unknown by millions and where access to blood testing is limited.

Using a camera that looks deep into the eye, Lions Eye Institute director of the Centre for e-medicine Yogesan Kanagasingam and international colleagues can detect cytomegalovirus infection around the retina, a condition affecting 40 per cent of people with HIV.

Professor Kanagasingam said a distinct pattern of changes included bleeding and whitening around the back of the eye when CMV, which can cause blindness, was advanced.

The scanner, which costs less than $10,000, has been used on between 20 and 30 patients in Thailand and is to be tested on bigger numbers in a longer study with the University of California.

“By scanning the eye you can say if they have HIV or AIDS, instead of a blood test,” the professor said.

It has some potential if they can find ways to scan for a few other common opportunistic infections, but there will always be people who have HIV and have not yet caught ANY secondary infections who will be missed

That's a good point, I am one of the few that got it in a bad way (Glandular Fever). That sometimes happens when you get it the first time, but it's then held permanently in check by the immune system, until you get HIV. I'm guessing it doesn't show up on eye scans until that happens, or if you were immunocompromised in some other way eg. radiotherapy.
