The cabinet on Tuesday approved in principle a proposal for the Armed Forces Security Centre of the Royal Thai Armed Forces Command to buy 20 armoured limousines for use by VIPs at a cost of 122.8 million baht.

Supachai Jaisamut, a deputy government spokesman, said the armoured cars would be for the Defence Ministry to use for providing security for leaders and important visitors to Thailand.

The military has only only three armoured limousines. One of them was badly damaged by protesters during the Songkran riots, one has a broken engine, and only one is available for use.

The cabinet also approved a budget of 66.23 million baht for the Defence Ministry to acquire crowd control equipment for seven companies of the armed forces.
