Cristiano Ronaldo: The full saga

A statement on United's official website read: "Manchester United have received a world-record, unconditional offer of £80million for Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid.

"At Cristiano's request - who has again expressed his Desire to leave - and after discussion with the player's representatives, United have agreed to give Real Madrid permission to talk to the player.

"Matters are expected to be concluded by 30 June. The club will not comment until further notice."

United have finally caved in to persistent interest from Real in the reigning Ballon d'Or and World Player of the Year.

The Portuguese international has repeatedly said it is his 'dream' to play for Real Madrid, who are finally set to get their man following the recent return to the club presidency of Florentino Perez.

It continues the explosive start to Perez's second term at the Bernabeu, with Brazilian star Kaka having signed from Milan for £58m on Monday evening.

Ronaldo joined United in 2003 and scored 118 goals in 292 appearances for the club, netting 26 times in 2008/09 as the Reds retained their Premier League title and reached the Champions League final.

To be honest at £80m I am not surprised. £50m for Ribery and a nice £30m profit :GoldenSmile1:

I also like to say that despite the fact I cant the little git (or big git now) its a loss for the Premiership as he is a world class footballer.

11 December 2008 - Ramon Calderon says that the Ronaldo transfer saga has all instigated by Ronaldo. "The player said he wanted to come here, a dream to come to Real Madrid and we received and we were happy to know that. After that I talked to Manchester but David Gill was very clear and said they didn't want to sell at all. We want to have a good relation with all the big clubs in Europe and Manchester is one of the best and I like to have a good relationship with them forever, and they said for the moment no."

18 December 2008 - Real Madrid director Pedro Trapote reveals that Real Madrid has already signed Ronaldo. But they cannot officially announce it due to contractual reasons. Despite this, he states: "If you are asking me what we are going to do now then I would tell you that we have already signed the best player for the summer. The best of the best. United only paid £12 million so £80 Million for Ronaldo is good business, if you ask me, and Fergie is no fool he must have a replacement lined up to replace him.

Ronaldo has been a good servant to Man Utd and a bit like when Patrick Vieira was playing for us, it was inevitable that money would talk one day. Having the same speculation very summer is boring and unsettles the other players in the squad.

Man Utd getting £80m for ONE PLAYER they bought for £10m is good business in any climate. I'm not sure if Ronaldo's and Kaka's signings for Real Madrid will help them catch Barcelona - that's what Real really want now and is one of the reasons why Perez got a 2nd term as Real's President. Barca's Spanish League, Cup and Champs League treble will take some beating, even for Real Madrid so they're going back to the "Galactico" policy. For the other clubs, it now puts transfer prices up by another 20-30 percent. They'll have to be renamed "Real MAD-drid" - Mental.

I for one dont understand what the big fuss is about.

The guy is employed by ManU,and have done a great job this far(and i am sure that even before this transfer, manU have got there money worth).

Now he feels that it is time to move on and take employment for another "company", just like so many of us has done in our own careers, and we will sure do it again.

And yes,i my self is a Man U supporter, but i cant hold any grudge against the lad.

Only thing to do(Imho) is to wish him luck.

Ps.And as stated before,NO player is greater then Man U.

Ok,Maybe Cantona was :GrinNod1:

The inevitable happened. As much as he will be missed one player does not make a team and £80 million is excellent business for United. Ronaldo was fantastic for us for six years and I just want to remember what he achieved and move on. If his heart is not really in it and it is his dream then good luck to him.

With £80 million United can rebuild their team very well. It's time to replace the deadwood in the likes of Nani and buy two world class midfield players (one of which to be the anchor man in a Keane type role) to replace Giggs and Scholes. But who is out there who can fill these positions? Don't forget we have Hargreaves to come back from injury too. I think we should get rid of Berbatov and use this money to buy another striker too.

What I'm more worried about is the implications that a transfer like this has on football and how far it is going to go before these ridiculous wages that the players earn get capped. Money has ruined football and I don't think it will be long before the big teams in Europe break away to form a super league.

Good luck and thanks for the memories Ronaldo.

He had a great season last year, but nothing special this year. Personally I think he is over rated. Maybe now Teves might be kept and Rooney will flourish.

he judist man utd at the end of this season he said that fergie was like a 2nd father to him and manchester was his home, then he goes and gets a transfer to madrid. i am a man utd fan and i know it was ronaldos dream to play for madrid but he should of told the supporters at the end of the season he wanted to leave!

it was a excellent fee he went for thats 1 good thing that came out of it and with 80m for tranfers united can strengthen there squad and will breeze next season without ronaldo, fergie will bring in valencia and tevez and hopefully another 2 players.

I wont be surprised if Real Madrid will have another go on Manchester United player, Wayne Rooney because Raul is getting past sell by date age..... and Van the Man Nistelrooy is injury prone... If Madrid buys Rooney, They will win everything next season...

Good post.

I think it was an excelent deal for united. They got fantastic value out of a £12.5 mil player. Would united have won the last two Titles without his goals?

£80 Million is just to good to turn down. Especially as its a straight £80Mil. A lot of these deals are paid in instalements, have some of the payments triggered by milestones (50 caps, 10 goals, international games etc) or try and makeweight with offering players the otherway instead of money. Just look at how liverpool tried to 'pay' £15mil for Garth Barry.

A straight £80 mil in the bank is fcking amazing.

Sure united are pissed about the way Real Madrid tapped him up, but they would have accepted the offer regardless.

£80 mill is to much money to have tied up in one player.

You can buy newcastle for £100 Mill, or best offer.

If he's out for the season and never the same again thats a huge loss.

United will buy a bunch of decent young players and hopefully develop the next ronaldo.

Does Ronaldo have what it takes to thrive in a galaxtico's evironment? We'll have to wait and see.

He seem to have a lost interest a bit in playing for united.

If he does a ronaldinho then united have done fantastic business.

This is fukin insane!!!!!!

West Ham, the entire club, were sold last week for a round 100 mill and Newcastle are on the market for the same amount. These sales would include not only the players, but the ground, all assets, training ground etc. not to mention the history, tradition, fanbase, and massive annual TV income.

Which would you rather have?

Was a larf though on Sportscentre though yesterday. Video footage of Ronaldo shopping in L.A. with 5 or 6 minders to carry his bags. Always thought shopping was a girl's game, and never knew it was so dangerous you needed that amount of muscle to be safe.

Some good points here.

IMO

The boy wanted to go so he is best gone.

70 Million Pounds is amazing & good business for Man Utd.

Will they miss him well yes may be.

The over all thing is Man Utd now have the money to add to a squad & rebuild in much needed areas like midfield where there is no general and some of the 86 boys are now old men.

It will also give them the cash to purchase a striker as last season they did not score to many goals.

Another big plus is Wayne Rooney may now get to play in his proper & correct position and not be out on the wing to no real value just a waist.

Ronaldo at 70 million is a joke in some ways but its the economics and endorsments that make it worth the money for Real Madrid.

Also they will be more attractive to football watchers around the world as they have the pretty Boy on board & he does create vast interest world wide.

He wanted to play for them as they were his team when he was a boy.

Ferguson needs to buy the correct men & add some real class.

Fergusons record in the market place has been poor of late with some players not working out to good or sick notes.

Barcelona showed just how poor Man Utd are in May & lets face it if Gus had been at Chelsea all season then I do not think Man Utd would have won The leauge.

Even Liverpool could have won the Leauge if Benitez had played Stevie G more with Torress.

Ferguson has to build on top of some team but he has to get it right as the money & debt is mounting at Old Trafford with the Glazzers loan.

IT will be interesting to see who he signs this summer.

Today in the press I see Ronaldo was with Paris Hilton last night in Hollywood, lucky fucker.

He is Camp & may be a George Michael time will tell but he is not the best player in the world by along way.

Messi & indesta are better for starters & I also score more per season than all of them put together when I am shooting in Pattaya. LOL.

My last point is Man Utd are not far away from needing a new manager IMO.

I love football but just around the corner there is some melt down to come & clubs need to remember the Banks & Leeds Utd.
