I always laugh at these things. Thais can't formulate plans that work. Period.

When it was discussed about closing soi 6 to traffic, the argument was "what about emergency vehicles"?

Make the bars pitch in and pay a security guard from 6-midnight to open the barricade if an emergency vehicle needs to get through.

Don't allow any chairs or tables outside of bars.

I don't know about you, but I'm getting the hell out the way if an ambulance with it's siren on starts coming down the soi.

Soi 6 has had these periodic enforcement pushes before and the pattern is usually the same: a few weeks of visible presence, then things settle into something closer to normal. The deputy mayor sitting down directly with bar operators is a step further than the usual press conference routine though. For visitors the practical effect is probably more pressure to use card payment rather than cash, and the street-side barking toned down for a while. The area is not going anywhere.

What makes you think there will be pressure to use a card rather than cash?

Thailand...the land of good intentions....Thailand....where nothing ever changes the lure of money outweighs anything else.....

I don't know for sure but the moment you have to pay electronically, there is the ability to trace the movement of every single person that so much as buys 1 beer.

From the government point of view, all of which (including so called democracies) have the goal of being able to track in HD every single person under their control.

They often portray this as it being safer which is what I think the response is regarding.

I have nothing to hide, even my mum walked down Soi 6 at Christmas (hard to gauge how unimpressed she was according to my dad) but I prefer not being under a microscope and evaluated for my morals by the scoundrels who often end up in power (generally speaking globally)

Realistically, it's the same as everywhere else. There will be some inconveniences in the short run with about 1% chance that anything sticks in the long term. The powers that be can't be bothered to actually change anything for the better, but they desperately need to be seen as 'doing something', so they trot out these PR campaigns and drop everything once the media has moved on.

If you think about the quantity of people who buy something even with AI they aren't going to profile every person who comes to Thailand.

There's no national security value tracking tourists who go to Soi 6 and do something shocking like buying a drink at a bar.

And I doubt bar owners, street vendors, restaurants and the like are too crazy about 100% of their income being tracked.
