Go-around at Heathrow - twice !

I just returned from BKK to LHR with Eva (26th May). The first attempt at landing was aborted fairly late on. I would estimate we were 30 seconds from touching down. We pulled up and went around again. The pilot told us briefly that Air Traffic Control has asked him to go around as there was too much congestion.

 

The same thing happened on the second approach. We landed without any problems 3rd time. Now I am not a particularly nervous flier but I have never had that before and when you are looking out the window expecting to touch down, it's a bit alarming when the engines roar and you start to pull up.

 

I understand it's not that unusual but it was definitely unsettling as your first reaction is that the pilot messed up his approach (and he may not be adequate).

 

Any one have any similar experiences at Heathrow ?

I've had it before but only because of adverse weather conditions. Almost got diverted to another airport. How was the weather when you landed?

There was no problem with the weather at all. The pilot said it was requested by ATC but I am wondering whether he got his approach wrong. I am a bit unconvinced that ATC would leave it that late to ask us to go around. First time we were really quite low - I would say less than 500 feet. I ahve looked on the net to see if there was anything reported (eg near miss or whatever) but I can't find anything.

My first trip to Thailand was a great day in Bangkok but was blowing a huge storm by the time I got to Phuket, the thai air pilot tried twice and was literally only feet from landing before pulling out twice and heading back to bangkok. At the time I was frustrated at the subsequent delay about 6 hrs overall then when the 1 2 Go plane crashed in similiar weather after if touched down I counted my blessings that thai pilot took the right decision to abort his landing

A go-around is nothing to worry about, they can be safely initiated right down to touchdown. With big jets it is often a spacing problem, maybe the approach controller vectored two aircraft too close to each other on final approach or it may just be the aircraft ahead slow to clear the Runway.

If that happened to me on returning to London I would hope that the jet just aborted the landing and returned directly back to Thailand.

    • For those that don't know, I did Friday meetings before many years ago,  I feel like we are missing a regular meeting for members,  I am aware guys meet at PA affiliated bars. But I want to start meeting people again, I'm inviting the guys following my YouTube also.

      The meetings is a chance to get to meet each other,  I plan to be at every meeting, I also have Dean from Dive bar that has offered to help out with a crawl after.
      The meetings will be  Monday  6 pm - 8 pm each week.  (The improvised bar crawl will commence at 8 p.m.  Dean will make his own plans for that.)

      Due to low numbers of people in town, I will start the meetings in our bars to help our girls and managers, please check back often incase things are changed.  I will be sharing the love around town later, but Soi 6 is first on my list (including bars that are friendly competition)   
      If bar owners want us to have a meeting at their bar,  they need to have a minimum of 10 girls.  I'm not dragging people to empty bars for favours.
      Please help us invite other members, it takes a while to get momentum.
      Monday 6 pm - 8pm  (then bar crawl after)
      21st March - Playpen Soi 6
      28th March - Night wish bar Soi 6
      4th April - Toy Box bar Soi 6
      11th April - Repent Soi 6
      18th April - where angels play Soi 6

      13th of June - (next bar we have open)

      I look forward to meeting people again.
