Have we lost one of the greatest Thai learning resources out there? I haven't been able to access if for a month. Boy, it sure would be a shame to lose that library of translations. It was the best place I've found for example sentences. I was just hoping to find some example sentences for "เสียแต่" and/or "เสียแต่ว่า". I could use Google, but its just not the same without the word by word translations.

Looks like it's down. Use their app - it has an enormous amount of example sentences as well. Fantastic resource and easy to use. Search for Thai-English Dictionary (TL). Here is the icon: IMG_0020.jpeg.c1dbb9a30d7707f2fab47fd7369ca0ea.jpeg

Wow! Never knew they had an app. I think apps as we know them barely existed when I started using their site lol.

Thanks, man!!!

Have you considered using AI?

Just don't take for granted everything it claims. 😉

I noticed the site down as well about a month ago. Just did a search of the domain name on whois which gave me the site owner's name (link). With that info I could put a face and multiple degrees to the name (Linkedin and Univ of Washington). No surprise he's in the Dept of Linguistics.

The search also led me to this reddit post. Reading the comments the problem might be something as simple as a replacement power supply for the hosting server. Hopefully we'll see the site's return in the near future. It's a great resource, well worth preserving.

I use it to break down phrases and help with words that don't translate well into English.

But it hallucinated wildly when I asked it for the poem that schoolchildren use to memorize the 20 words containing ใ instead of ไ. I wasted a lot of time learning a poem that made no grammatical sense but nevertheless contained all 18* words. The real poem is so much easier to work with.

Fun fact: Despite near and far both being pronounced "glai", only near (ใกล้) uses ใ - far is ไกล

* It also hallucinated that one word is obsolete and now spelled with ไ (the word it chose isn't one of the 20), and one of them is ดีใจ, with ใจ already on the list (not true). So it told me that there are actually only 18 words that I should remember.

Re-AI, I'd rather go with the Thai-Language breakdowns. I'm surprised how much stuff ChatGPT fucks up just in English 🤣 It's got a ways before I'd trust its Thai - think Google Translate in the early days.

Does this resource help, I haven't used Thai Language.com but have used this resource a bit.

It sounds like it does similar.

The thai-language.com site was much more comphrensive in what it covered. Using the Wayback Machine site you can get an idea of just how much Thai language material the site contained.

Could you please post here the poem in Thai ? I would be interested to memorize the 20  words with ใ and ไ. I may know most of them but not sure :-)

Thanks. The second link works for me. I was a bit to presumptuous. I know only about half of them. I have to study more...

ใต้    under
ใบ้    deaf
ใย    web, fibre
ใกล้    near
ใหม่    new
สะใภ้    daughter in law
ใช้    to use
ใฝ่    pay attention to…
ใจ    heart, mind, soul
ใส่    to put
หลงใหล    fascinatingly
ใคร    who?
ใคร่    want, desire

ผู้ใหญ่ หาผ้าใหม่ ให้สะใภ้ ใช้คล้องคอ
a grown-up looks for new cloth for his daughter-in-law to wear around her neck

ใฝ่ใจ เอาใส่ห่อ มิหลงใหล ใครขอดู
He carefully put it in a wrap and not fell for it if anyone asks to have a look

จะใคร่ ลงเรือใบ ดูน้ำใส และปลาปู
Would like to get on a sailing boat to see clear water, see fish and crab

สิ่งใด อยู่ในตู้ มิใช่อยู่ ใต้ตั่งเตียง
Whatever is in a cupboard is not under a bed

บ้าใบ้ ถือใยบัว หูตามัว มาใกล้เคียง
A crazy guy carrying gossamer his blurry ears and eyes are coming closer

เล่าท่องอย่าละเลี่ยง 20 ม้วนจำจงดี
Chanting this poem, do not avoid 20 “ai” do remember them
