18 Hour Flights for East Coast USA People

I was searching for flights in late October through Vayama, which is a site I have used before as they came in cheaper than many others. As I scrolled past the cheapest flights to see what they had for American Airlines, I found flights from North Carolina where I am either direct to London (we have a daily 777 that services one of the big drug companies) or going up to JFK and over to London and then on British Air to BKK. Total flight time was about 18.5 hours. Have never seen this route offered before and it was a little more expensive but considering you arrive at about 3:30pm the next day instead of near midnight, to me it would be worth the extra money. But wanted to pass the info on for those of you that might be looking for a shorter flight.

I am thinking about going this way as well. Arriving between 10:000 pm and midnight absolutely sucks! Another alternative is to go to LAX and then take a China Air flight to BKK. The flight leaves at 1:30 am and arives at 11:30 the next day. Good thing about the flight is it is cheap ($975) and you can get a flight to LAX from IAD for under $300.

I know some guys that used to do this, they lived near Newark or JFK so they could get a non stop flight to Europe and connect to BKK.

Personally I am not sure if I would do it for a holiday, it is not only the extra cost but there is something about LAX and SFO international terminals, standing in line for a check in to Taipei with people shouting in Mandarin, Filipinos checking in boxes with their name and address on the box(Ms. Angela Rodriguez, Batangas City Philippines) makes me feel like I am going to Asia compared to a bunch of people with their brand new passports going to Europe hoping for as many passport stamps as they can.

That being said I am glad I don't have to get on a plane soon.

I took that route in Jan, but not by choice. IAD to LHR on United, and LHR to BKK on Thai Air, which was great! Arrived at 6AM or so as opposed to the usual 11PM. Bonus was that I was on an awards ticket, but still accrued mileage from the Thai Air leg of the trip.

Are you saying Thai made a mistake?

^ No, I'm saying United made a mistake. I was on a United awards ticket that didn't accrue mileage. When I was rerouted, the Thai leg wasn't considered an awards flight, thus free miles.

I am flying out of Raleigh Durham as well in late Oct, Can't wait.. Is there a long lay over in london? I am torn between that flight through london and Cathay pacifica which brings you into bkk around 5pm. 24 hour flight through hkk.

Chreel-

The flights that I have seen going to Bkk via London which depart from Washington Dulles appear to have a 10-12 hour layover. I am looking at flying via Cathay Pacific out of JFK as well, provided the rate falls below $1,300.

I had the same thing happen on the same route. But I believe it was due to a Thai Air screwup. At checkin on return, Thai claimed my reservation had been deleted/lost ("washed" was the word they used). So for a while, until they straightened it out just before boarding, I was sweating it. It was an award ticket in biz class and I got the miles plus the class bonus.

I live in the Eastern Us and I do NOT like routing thru LHR to BKK for several reasons.

1 - I don't like the LHR airport in general (much prefer routing thru Narita). Taxes and fees on tickets thru LHR were substantially higher than NRT when I flew the London route.

2 - On the routing I had, depart US at night for LHR, then depart LHR mid morning for arrival in BKK in the early morning.

I don't like arriving early in the day trashed from travel and jet lag. It's a struggle to stay awake all day and the evening's activities suffer from the fatiugue

I have to pay the hotel for the night before I arrive if I want to ensure a room is available.

I spend all day in the US waiting for night to come so that I can go to the LOS. Feels like wasted time to me.

I much prefer travelling west from the eastern US if I can avoid a stop on the west coast; IAD-NRT-BKK is my preference when doing United.

Next year going to try JFK-FRA-SIN (couldn't get EWR-SIN on award points).

I just booked my flight for October. There is a Continental flight from Houston at 10:50 AM direct to Tokyo on a 777; I connect to ANA and arrive in BKK at 9:50 PM. I'm sure you could catch an early morning flight to catch this flight in Houston. It will probably be the same cost as going east. I know this gets in at night, but it avoids LHR and LAX which are the suckiest airports I have to go through when I travel. The cost is $935 from Houston which was the cheapest I could find. As previously mentioned, China Air leaves at around 11:30 PM from LAX. There is another option at around the same time, on Korean Airlines, which I used on my last trip in March. The service was excellent and the layover in Seoul was only a couple of hours. Incheon Airport is new, with free wireless so it is a good option. Enjoy your trip and good luck.

Same here. Worst part was that I arrived at IAD about 2PM, but the flight to LHR didn't leave until after 10PM. I ended up spending about eight hours or so in the Red Carpet Lounge. I will say that there seemed to be much less noticeable jet lag going east.

  • 1 month later...

I just purchased my ticket through cathay pacific, leaving Raleigh Durham @ 6am landing JFK 7:30 leaving JFK 10:30 am arriving hongkong then arriving to Bangkok 5:30 pm. 1st time using this airline, I always took direct flights from JFK to BKK using thaiair when i lived in NY, now they don't offer that flight anymore, what a shame. So i hope that i won't be disapointed using Cathay. Now it's waiting 4 months till i leave.
