Amazon Prime app (on firestick TV) - why is everything in Thai and how can I change it to English?

Featured Replies

I just subscribed to Amazon Prime (video) again. I subscribe to it on and off, and the last time I did was maybe a year ago. Never had problems before, but this time when I'm using the app on my TV, all the menu and navigation options are in Thai. Some of the movie titles and descriptions are also in Thai but the main issue is the menu and navigation. Its all in Thai, despite me using a VPN set up as UK. I have as UK amazon prime account - I signed up and re-subscribed on my laptop, which was set to UK also (via VPN).

This never happened the last time I subscribed and I was able to watch Amazon Prime content on my smart TV, while in my condo in Thailand - everything was in English, with UK/US content (not filled with thai movies or thai tv shows).

So why has it changed now ?  why does the smart TV seem to be ignoring the VPN region and ignoring my UK-based account/subscription ?

If there's something in the settings to change the language, I can't access it, because the menu, and sub-menus are all in Thai.

Is there a quick solution ?   Has anyone else experienced this ?

I am going to guess that the operating system starts up and detects where you are before the VPN connects. Open up the prime app and leave it open.  Then connect the VPN, go into settings, applications, and force close the prime app. The restart the Prime app and see if it connects to the UK

Yeah — this is actually a very common new problem that started affecting Amazon Prime Video accounts abroad (especially in Thailand and other Asian countries) over the past year or so.

Here’s a breakdown of what’s going on and how to fix or work around it 👇

🧭 What’s happening

  1. Amazon now enforces regional detection on smart TVs and TV sticks.

    • A year ago, Prime Video only cared about the account’s registered country.

    • Now it also checks the device’s IP, TV firmware region, and even app store region (Samsung, LG, Android TV, etc.).

    • This means that even if your VPN is set to the UK, if your TV itself is physically in Thailand (and its regional settings or app store region says "Thailand"), Prime Video will load the Thai version of the app.

  2. VPNs rarely work on smart TVs anymore.

    • TVs don’t have full VPN support unless you’ve set up VPN at the router level (so that the whole network appears UK-based).

    • Using a VPN just on your laptop doesn’t affect your TV — the TV is still connecting via your Thai IP.

  3. Your UK account is still fine — Amazon is just auto-switching the Prime Video region for the device.

⚙️ Workarounds & Fixes

Option 1: Change your TV’s region

Depending on the brand:

  • Samsung Smart TV:

    1. Go to Settings → Support → Terms & Policy → Reset Smart Hub.

    2. During re-setup, you’ll be asked to select your region — choose United Kingdom.

    3. Reinstall Prime Video.

    4. Log in again with your UK Amazon account.
⚠️ You may lose Thai apps temporarily (like AIS, Line TV, etc.).

  • LG Smart TV:

    1. Settings → General → Location → LG Services Country → set to UK.

    2. Restart TV.

    3. Open Prime Video again.

  • Android TV / Google TV:

    1. Change system language to English (UK) first.

    2. Go to Settings → Device Preferences → Location → set to “Off” or “UK”.

    3. Uninstall and reinstall Prime Video.

Option 2: Use Prime Video via HDMI instead of the TV app

If you plug in a laptop or streaming stick that does use your UK VPN, that will work perfectly:

  • Connect your laptop via HDMI.

  • Start Prime Video in a browser with your UK VPN active.

  • You’ll get full UK content and English interface.

Or:

  • Use a Fire TV Stick or Roku where you can install the VPN directly or configure router-level VPN.

Option 3: Change your Prime Video region manually (on web)

  1. Go to amazon.co.uk/mytv
