On my next trip to Thailand I would like to try learning golf. 1 to 1 lessons seem to be about a third of the price of my local golf club and also this gives me something to do outside of mongering.

A few questions about this:

1. I can see a bunch of golf courses on online maps around Bangkok and Pattaya, but most of them don't mention lessons. Do most golf courses not offer lessons or do they just not advertise that online?

2. Any recommendations for where to get 1 to 1 lessons? I would prefer something near Bangkok, but otherwise also interested in opinions around Pattaya.

3. It seems there are different types of facilities: Indoor driving range using projectors, outdoor driving ranges, proper golf courses. What do you think is best for learning as a beginner?

4. How many hours of lessons do you think it takes to be able to play a normal round of golf without being a hinderance to everyone else?

Best bet if your new is the driving range on Third Rd, Pattaya. Should be a reasonable price relative to a golf course, which might be eye-watering.

Driving range for beginners works best, and after playing 59 out of my 66 years and nowhere near mastery. There is a short course I think in Pratumnack which would be a good place to start.

Also the range behind Makro on Pattaya Nua is a good choice.

Both driving ranges have onsite teachers starting from around 600-700 baht a lesson I think it is.

The short course in Pratumnak is attached to the Asia hotel.

9 hole Par 3 course....not in the best condition but good for practice definitely. Price is 420 baht and you can go round as many times as you want.

1 A lot of golf courses in Thailand don't seem to have Pros like you would find in the West

Most of the time the Pro Shop is manned by some TG on wages 

 

2 I don't have a suggestion for this but I do.

The most important thing in getting lessons is get someone you trust and someone you believe in 

Plenty can try to teach you but you need to find someone with the patience to work with you 

 

3 None of them are really relevant 

You are trying to get the basics sorted so an indoor projector or an outdoor driving range are same same. If anything you don't need on course lessons yet 

 

4 This is irrelevant. Regardless of how shit you are at golf get out there and play.

If you are going slow and better golfers are waiting behind you let them through then continue 

That's more important having the right etiquette.

That being said as you are learning on course it would probably be best you don't go to real busy courses with lots of golfers playing

 

You want to take your time getting your game sorted and you don't need to feel stress about pace of play 

 

If you are going to go get lessons get them in putting chipping bunkers etc and don't just focus on the full swing

Short game is so important to get right 

If your just starting, I think its rewarding to see a shot actually head off into the distance. That's what excites you into wanting more.

A simulator is good but you only get a feeling of distance once you're half decent.

I have first hand experience with Steve at pattayagolfpro.com. He is laid back and a really good instructor.

I have had a lesson from Mike at the driving range on 3rd Road, Scottish fella he’ll help you out.
