Inexpensive low light point-and-shoot camera for consensual hotel room encounters?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

What compact, digital camera would work well for very low light conditions like hotel rooms and massage parlors? Used would be fine. I know many use modern mobile phones, but I don't have USD $1,000 to purchase a new one. Thought I'd be open to inexpensive Android phones that do well in *very* low light conditions. Any good older models of camera that I could purchase for under 150 USD / Euro? Would like a light point and shoot that takes up little space in luggage (since I only travel with carry-ons). Not looking for a DSLR. I want it primarily for video.

Many hotel rooms often have such poor light in general; especially the standard rooms at March hotel (the premium rooms seem to have decent lighting). And I don't want to carry a ring or other, separate light source around with me.

The camera you are seeking is a DJI Osmo action 4, still being sold by dji even though the 5 had been out for some time, superb reliable action camera, so simple to use, can be found for around $250 USD or less. Much more reliable than anything go pro and does not overheat in most scenarios.

Anything less than that price level is usually junk clone rubbish.

The Osmo Action 4 really is not that fantastic in low light, especially the digital stabilization is shaky. For a small cam I have changed to the Osmo Pocket 3 which is a bit more expensive but it has a larger sensor that makes it more light sensitive and as a gimbal camera the footage is very stable. I am not into vlogging but I see a lot of YT vloggers using this camera for it's small size, affordability and great image quality.

If you want to upscale a bit you might think about buying a mirrorless camera with one or two lenses. Big advantage is that you can start for a very affordable price and expand over time. As an example I still have a Canon M50 Mark II with a Sigma 30mm F1/4 lens. The camera second hand would be about 250 USD or EUR and the Sigma lens maybe $/€ 150,=. Great quality setup for street or portet photography but also a good setup to start with vlogging if that's what you want.

At home I have a full frame camera that costs at least 3k just for the body and a few lenses that are crazy expensive but I would never take those on holiday to Thailand. There I still take the M50 with a DJI RS3 Mini Gimbal, the Sigma 30mm, a 11-22 wide angle lens and a 55-200 telephoto lens and it basically covers everything video/photo for maybe 900 to 1000 all together...

Well that has not been my experience at all with the action 4, no need for stabalisation in the room, the low light performance for me is fine, I'm not making videos in my room to put out on youtube 😀

Everything else you have suggested is way out of the budget the OP wanted or too cumbersome, I have a Sony A7cr + 20-70 lens, cost about $4600 but in the room I'd still use the action 4, just much easier to handle and grab in the heat of the moment. Just like other items in use in the bedroom, size matters 😎

Mostly it's up to the usecase. This is different for everyone I guess. I used the Action 4 mostly for outside video and during daytime it performed great but in the evening moving around the footage was clear but not super stabilized. In your case when you use it for "memories😇" in the room I guess it's good enough.

If the filming is consensual why not just turn on some lights to improve the lighting?

Then you can get by with a gopro which works well on a handheld stick

Technically true if you are filming in a room, lights on solves 90% of low light issues... You do need to get to get some camera lighting settings right for indoor shooting but if you get that set a Gopro or DJI Action 4 will be just fine.

I agree.  I always find hotel room too dark

Thanks so much. I'll check out the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 and see if it's in-budget. The low light element is super important to me since so many hotels these days have such dim lighting as I've already stated. I don't vlog per se, but I do like to livestream general travel adventures and my current mobile phone isn't up to the task. I don't know what model, but evidently some people livestream with cheap ~$100 to a max of $200 android mobile phones that have much better cameras than my ancient iPhone 6, but I don't know what model you can get at that price.

I strive to pack as light and low-volume as possible and I only travel with carry-on luggage). So I want to avoid larger / heavier cameras and having to carry lenses around with me.

Yep, I turn on *all* the lights and it's still often dim as hell.

If possible, book rooms with windows, or better yet, a balcony.

Then open the curtains.

But I guess that only works in the daytime.

My Samsung Galaxy Ultra S23 that I bought about two years ago has superb low-light capability.

Below are photos I took inside a dimly-lit massage parlor booth.

Usually I edit a photo like this, with only simple tweaking, nothing fancy.

rrytr.thumb.jpg.f6652b23542f75b1f57858c60bd778cb.jpg

In the shot below, her phone illuminates her face nicely.

But these are far from pro-level shots, and the quality might not be satisfying for you.

Thanks. During the day, I often try to open the curtains just a small amount to let extra light in. At the hotel I've been staying in, I can't open them much because the balcony faces toward other rooms! Girls tend to want to shut the blinds completely as well, and I can't say I blame them. Yep, dimly lit massage rooms are another place I want to film in. And yeah, I want to be prepared for any time of the day or night, so I don't want to rely on outside light.

I want good quality, but I don't have the funds to pay for what might be *pro* quality. The equivalent of a used iPhone that is maybe 3 iterations from whatever is current would probably work well. But I prefer not paying the "Apple Tax" and would be find with an equivalent inexpensive Android phone. Samsung Galaxy seems to be the premium Android phone and thus must be a lot more expensive than other options. Hoping to find other options with great cameras.

What kind of tweaking do you to the photos? Just play with brightness and contrast or use something else like a filter? I don't have Photoshop, but I do have GIMP which is free open source software and supposedly close to feature parity with Photoshop. I haven't had great luck with adjusting brightness and contrast--some other part of the frame tends to suffer.

I'm old school.  I've used a Canon PowerShot SD1200  camera for years for my hotel room photography and it works great.  Does video too.  Never a problem with typically low hotel room lighting.   Not sure they make them anymore but I bought a backup (used) on Amazon for around 200 USD.

It won't be, expect it to be around 4x your budget, used.  @MrRay who recommended the SD1200 was pretty dead on, even for a camera that debuted in 2009 it has solid low-light specs, especially when compared to modern cell phone cameras.

You primarily want two things for low light: 1) largest sensor size and 2) lower /f (2.0 or lower should work very well).  A used Canon PowerShot S100 12.1MP (released 2011, with a 1/1.7" sensor.  NOT the older 2.1mp "Digital ELPH") is probably one of your best options at your $150 price point.

The Panasonic Lumix LX7 and Sony RX-100 would be even better  but would cost $200+ and 300+, used.

Improving the lighting is often much easier/better/cheaper than upgrading the camera. Use a second cheap phone in flashlight mode as an uplight placed on the bed or held by the model - involve her by letting her illuminate herself. No end of creative effects especially in the bathroom with a mirror. However an uplight is usually not flattering for a portrait - see the infamous Krupp portrait https://aboutphotography.blog/blog/story-of-alfred-krupps-portrait-by-arnold-newman

Yeah, a while back I took a few photos of a cute masseuse at Relax massage on Buakhao Road.

Her name was "Fang."

gnngn.thumb.jpg.27d4c0573fc47deb0f0f948f940d2073.jpg

The lighting was very dim in the room.

When I complained it was too dark for taking decent photos of her face, she used the light on her phone for illumination.

imageedit_1_6351665717.thumb.jpg.2defa284f931e8aa7bd04d764411b5fc.jpg

She was so damn cute, I kept staring at her face when we were showering together afterwards.

"Why you looking me?" she asked.

"Because your face so beautiful," I said.

She laughed, and agreed.

Yeah, all cute chicks know they are cute.

Sadly, she abruptly quit Relax soon after, and never replied to my Line messages.

Thats what I fucking hate about P4P.

Many times you only get to fuck the hottie once, and that's all you get.

Everything is so fucking fleeting in this life. 😩

The reason for the excess blackout is because a previous photo of mine was deleted and "friendly" warning was issued, after I posted a photo of a ST chick bathing in a glass-door shower.

Even though her back was to me, and I pixilated her ass, that wasn't enough.

However, without giving out too much information, a ST freelancer once told me that for an Asian man, I have a "long" dick.

Yes, I find that it's that last half-inch of cruel, balls-deep thrusting into a spinner TG's helpless pussy that makes her wince and gasp in pain.

Oh yeah man -- I'm the star of my own sick porn video fantasy in my head!

However, let me hasten to point out that I have seen the light -- and am now a kinder and gentler motherfucker.

Especially since I'm mostly impotent nowadays -- due to hormone injections for my followup cancer treatment that has reduced my testosterone level to near-zero. 😔

This is divine retribution and fitting punishment, you see -- for a pervert grandpa farang whose tired old body is wearing out.

As ye sow, so shall ye reap. 😩

I'd like to think my lowlight photography is my specialty.

I was a nightclub photographer between 2010-2015, often working in near pitch back clubs. Carrying around 2 flashes was the norm: one in my hand and another placed in the environment.

You need light my friend. Even with the most recent cameras and lenses, you need light: so your job will be to mold the situation and scenario into an area that has light, or provide the lighting yourself.

Here's a shot on one of the cheapest Samsung phones available in 2024 : the a35 ($400AUD). The room was pitch black, I turned on the light in the shower/bathroom and had feint dim LED lighting in the room.

Now I realize your question wasn't actually about photos but low light videos so my simple answer to you is: it won't happen or look good without you having an exceptionally high level of experience with knowing how to light the scene. Low light photos are much easier to do compared to low light videos.

Thanks for all the replies. Since I need a new phone anyway, I might purchase a refurbished iPhone maybe 3 generations old, then work on improving the lighting conditions. Someone mentioned the washrooms / bathrooms and yeah, I *always* want to get a girl there and do some filming because "vanity" lighting is pretty bright; but I never seem to get round to it, or it feels awkward.

Semi-recently, I saw some video from the inside of a brothel club / hotel called Classic hotel in Jakarta; quite dark in there, but his video came out amazing. He claims to have used an iPhone 14; although it's "snuck" footage, so I don't know how he hid the phone and managed to film. Unfortunately the video went to "subscribers only" on his YouTube channel so I can't share it. Probably for the best, because he filmed mongers too. Bad Mojo.

Ordered a refurbished iPhone 15 Pro yesterday. I needed a new phone desperately and the main camera specs are impressive. That should cover my low light needs. Also got a small mobile phone holder and an LED light that fits on top.

I compared the main camera lens hardware specs on the iPhone 15 Pro with the 16 pro and 17 pro and there didn't seem to be any difference; just some software upgrades that may produce marginally better photos. Not worth the price difference. A new iPhone 17 pro costs around USD $1100 and I just got a refurbished iPhone 15 pro for USD $470.

The only cameras that are really going to excel in low are are all going to be full size or medium frame sensored cameras  but then you are in a different price bucket.

The phone you bought is likely a good choice as they have basically replaced point and shoot cameras except for niche uses.
