Can’t travel to Thailand in September so on an impulse I booked a 2 week August trip to Pattaya plus 2 nights in Bangkok. Had a look at ZipAir but their availability for the lie flat seats didn’t match my days. Instead, used 287,500 miles for LAS NRT / NRT LAS Business and a separate ticket on Thai Bus, $2,679 with ideal connection time for a shower and sushi in the JAL lounge. Total for trip $57 tax on AA, $2679 for Thai Airways. 
 

LAS SEA 8am - 10:40am

SEA NRT 1:30pm - 3:30pm

NRT BKK 5:25pm - 9:55pm

BKK NRT 7:45am - 3:55pm

NRT DFW 6:30pm - 4:35pm

DFW LAS 7:29pm - 8:16pm

 

What would happen if one of the BKK NRT flights are delayed? I frequently book the same combo of tickets [miles one carrier, cash on another]  but my travel insurance will cover a new ticket if delays of [any] public transportation result in a no-show.

There is always some risk. If I misconnect, I will be at the mercy of the airline’s no show policy, although with Platinum Executive status at American I might get some relief. Misconnecting with Thai, maybe my Star Alliance Gold and United 1K status is worth something . If not, I’ll eat the cost and spend the night in Narita on my dime. On some trips I actually do a one night stop over in Narita, usually on trips to Indonesia or Malaysia

I am interested in your travel insurance recommendation. 

 

I’d be nervous about the 2.5 hour connection time at Narita on the way back.

if you’re carry-on only, you may be fine, but I think you will need to claim and re-check any bags. You will also probably need to clear immigration in order to do so.

When you check in at BKK, see if they have an interline agreement with JAL.  If so, they may be able to check your bag all the way through to DFW.

AA and TG do have an interline agreement and will through check bags,  but the tickets must be on the same prn or linked together via an agent prior to check-in; one being an award ticket shouldn’t make any difference if the agent knows what they are doing (which seems to be random nowadays).

The company I'm with doesnt offer international service and afraid I cant recommend any but would imagine that it should be hard to find. Can sens you relevant section of my policy terms if interested
