A British backpacker who believed he had been poisoned from a spider bite died in police custody in Thailand after officers thought he was "insane", an inquest jury has been told.

Three weeks before his death, Daniel Salmon, 32, told his mother on the phone he believed he had been bitten on the hand by a spider, which had caused his arm to swell up as far as the elbow.

After deliberating for around 20 minutes, jurors at Worthing County Court in West Sussex recorded a verdict of death by natural causes.

Maureen Salmon, 64, told the inquest she had been alarmed as he had appeared confused and slurred his speech

But she said despite receiving several conflicting reports from the Thai authorities since her son's death on April 14 2007, none acknowledged the bite.

A Bangkok post-mortem examination found Mr Salmon, a technician from Lancing, died of failure of respiratory and blood circulation systems, but Dr Mark Appleton told the inquest this was not a conclusive cause of death.

Forensic pathologist Dr Appleton, who did not receive the report until August last year, said he suspected much of it had been lost when it was translated from Thai into English and some parts were missing while others were illegible.

"Unfortunately it's not really possible to come to a conclusion as to what the cause of death might have been," he added.

Mrs Salmon said her son, known as Danny, had spent nine months backpacking around Australia the previous year. He was nearing the end of a two-month trip around South East Asia when he died.

He believed he was bitten in Laos on March 22. He was given anti-toxic treatment but could not be prescribed an anti-venom as he could not identify the spider

Yep, happened to me 2 months ago...

Got bit on the ankle by a spider while at the Hilton Beach Resort on Mactan island, near Cebu... Woke up the next morning and it felt like an insect bite, no worries and about my business... The next morning it had turned red, was swelling and becoming abscessed... I put antibiotic cream on it, a band-aid and went about my business... Next morning, it was more swollen, red and the abscess was getting larger!!! Oh fuck!!! I go to the hospital, they clean it out, prescribe antibiotics and bandages... Two days later and in another part of PI, my ankle is swollen to the size of my knee, the abscess is now the size of a dime and goes to the bone and I can't walk on it... I have red streaks running up my leg and the lymph nodes in my groin where inflamed... Staph infection... Back to hospital, minor surgery, hospital room, IV drip, stronger antibiotics... It's still healing now... Doc said I almost lost my leg...

If something bites you while traveling in a tropical region and you suspect it is venomous, DON'T WAIT, go to a doctor...

I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day

I was bitten on the leg in Pattaya 8 years ago. I didn't see the spider but there were clearly visible fang marks visible on the bite wound. The lump grew and became very painful. I went to the hospital after about 5 days and they told me that it had almost become an abcess. Injected antibiotics slowly cleared it but no hairs would grow near the site of the spider bite for a few years afterwards.

Bitten twice since coming to Pattaya. Both times by the tiny little white one that jumps.

Didnt react too badly just bad swelling etc for a few days. However had a mate here bitten by the same little bugger and his foot swelled to massive proportions and was pretty much in agony for days. I would hazard a guess that different people react differently in the same way a wasp sting is harmless to most but can kill others.

Laamok was also bitten but were were never quite sure by what.

There are thousands of varieties of caterpillars... Many in North America are extremely poisonous and can kill a grown adult...

That's it. I'm going to live in a bubble.

If Kat is in there with you, why would you ever come out???

Something in the story confuses me?

He took three weeks to die, from a spider bite?

Doesn't that seem a little odd to anyone else?

What is odder is he went to the police instead of the hospital.
