For all their advances this seems like a step backwards.

They have our passport #s in their DBs.

They already stated they record our #s on arrival, and when we leave, which is why we don't get an exit stamp now.

They already get our passport #s when we check into any accomodation.

They can't join the passport # from the airport and hotel to know where you're at?

And the airlines for any onward flights have our passport #s already which can be provided.
