Yes I am the same, need a window seat to create a platform to lean on. Stuff the gap with pillows, coat or something so it is soft.

The other tip I discovered was when travelling with others, there was 4 of us all together and the layout was 3-3-3, so I sat in the window seat behind the 3 of them. My daughter in front of me didn't mind me extending my leg through the side on to her arm rest. I am only 5"5' so not long legs. I found this the best possible position of remotely getting any sleep for me that is.

Note: Don't poke your leg or anything else on to the arm rest in front of you unless you know them - lol!

For a pillow, I use the Cabeau travel pillow.  It's very supportive, and helps stabilize my head while sleeping.

I always have the same luck as you, the classic crying baby, the grandmothers who lean on the seat Launching you like a catapult and the fools who don't stop talking during sleeping hours.

What I don't understand at all is neck pillows. They don't go up parallel or at least 45 degrees rotated to the side of your face, so how are you supposed to lie on those? I can't bend my neck 90 degrees. I triedd using them and they provide me no comfort whatsoever. What exactly are you supposed to do with a neck pillow?

I have used a spare fleece jacket with the body zipped up and rolled and the sleeves tied together - put the rolled up bit on the shoulder the side you want your head to lean and the tied arms under the opposite armpit to hold everything in place.

I have to be really tired to sleep on a flight, I need a bed to do it properly, at most I close my eyes for half an hour.

a good supportive neck pillow: soft, removable cover can be washed, memory foam can be rolled up for storage, most importantly has to be designed just like a neck brace
cons: might be too bulky on a smaller person, bulky for travel but best for your neck

Years ago I had an overnight return flight, then I HAD to work all day, then I would drive two hours home……. So I knew I had to sleep on the flight.

so I went to a Pattaya pharmacy and (after a couple of refusals) bought some Zambian sleeping pills.

get all the way to the gate and pop a pill……….. then the air hostess pulls me aside and upgrades me to business class….. I was asleep before take off right through to disembarkation………. Missed the whole experience 😭😭😭

I could never sleep on planes. Even with window seat, neck pillow (bought expensive 5 star ones and still sleepless flights), head phones, everything else.

Even though I'm up on no sleep day before. Still nothing. I just become tired and unable to sleep which is the worst thing. If I'm lucky I'll get small periods of 30 minute naps intermittently throughout the 12+hr flight. One time I got 4 hours uninterrupted sleep on a flight back and thought I'd won the lottery. That was a good day. But majority of the time is just slogging it out and trying to keep busy watching movies or staring out into the darkness.

I struggle to sleep on planes, even though I'm in a business class lie flat seat.

Last trip back was the best I think I have slept -- maybe 5+ hours between Taipei and Los Angeles.

Flying biz and a 7,5 mg  Zoplicone popped when the first meal is served will more or less guarentee crew have to weak me 6-7 hours later for breakfast. Without sleeping aid maybe an hour or two.

I also have problems sleeping on all classes of flights, first, biz, and economy.  I cannot sleep more than a couple hours on flights.  However, if I am dead tired without sleep when I get on the plane, I can sleep even in economy.

When I return to the USA, I have a 12 hour time zone difference, so I try to stay awake on the flights so I am dead tired when I return to the USA, stay awake until bedtime, then pop sleeping pills and try to get 8+ hours of sleep to try to readjust.  It still takes me 1+ week to readjust at age 73.

I generally get a window seat and sleep on the window if its on the right side of the plane. I’ve never been a neck pillow guy or any other accessories or pills. I never recline my seat. I’ve used the airlines blanket once flying over Canada during the winter, now I just bring a hoodie or jacket for cold flights. Noise cancelling headsets or earphone are good. Not sleeping before the trip, just don’t miss your flight if its at 5am or something. Falling asleep on the plane before it takes off is a game changer. Bring movies, books or music if you normally hate the in-flight entertainment options. Avoid over eating and drinking, that would cause you extra trips to the John.

I sleep best on flights that depart late at night.

I can't afford business class yet, but I do upgrade to premium economy and switch seats if someone is next to me.

lots of great ideas in this thread....some good ideas for the future.

I normally cant sleep on economy flights, i just tend to dose off for a couple of hours if im lucky.

A blanket or jacket next to the window can help

I have slept a couple of times on business flights, but still cant sleep some times.....

I've just been looking into business class with a view to sleeping better.

I am surprised how little information is given by major airlines during the booking process.

I had to do 'live chat' with Qatar airlines to ask if their seats were 'lie flat' on the flight I was looking at.  Answer was no, they just recline.  Need to choose 'Qsuite' flights.

Emirates have various variations, but its not clear while booking what you'll get.

A third party web site called 'seatguru' had the information, but there's no guarantee its accurate.

My understanding from reading several reviews: Qatar has a history of frequent equipment changes, which eliminates Qsuite availability, and seatguru is full of outdated information.

I just don't sleep a day before the flight. Usually sleep about 7-9 hours every trip.

IMHO Emirates always has lay flat beds in Business Class. The 380 is the best product, you get you only little suite. It is an amazing product

The 777 is not as good, but it is still a lay flat bed. I avoid the 777, it is definitely an inferior product compared to the 380

I believe they have premium class on some flights, never used one on emirates, but always tend to find premium seats are kind of expensive compared to what you get. An economy seat with exit aisle row for an extra $100 is a better option.  If i am flying a short haul where no business is available i go for the exit aisle half way down the plane near the wing.

I'm very surprised by that answer from the Qatar rep, but perhaps it was because their short haul flights do not have lie flat?  I would be shocked to hear that Qatar operate long haul flights without lie flat seats.

For example, I fly EVA a lot for either LAX, SEA, and/or SFO to BKK.  The long haul is always lie flat, but the regional TPE-BKK leg is sometimes a 2-2-2 layout (while other times it is 1-2-1 lie flat).  A 1-2-1 layout is a virtual guarantee that it is lie flat seating.

I used to swear by seatguru, but it has become obsolete.  I read on a blog that the seat maps haven't been updated since March 16, 2020.  I used to like to check the reader comments, but pretty much stopped looking at it after I saw that.  Damn shame that it went to shit.

I now use seatmaps.com

A second option is AeroLopa, but it doesn't allow you to look up by flight number; just airplane type. That's a little too complex for me, so I stick with seatmaps.com.

My back won’t allow me to spend more than 4 hours in an economy seat so I always pay for business long haul. It’s crazy expensive compared to economy but at least I can sleep for as long as I like. My favourite seats to BKK in order: Qatar - Emirates - Thai - EVA.

I can't sleep on flights. My GP prescribed Temazepam, but to no avail. Now I just raw dog it, I do take the Temazepam though, because it definitely helps with the mood and the jetlag.

Last trip I went for allnighters before the flight, as soon as im trough the gate I take two melatonin tablets. And in a matter of seconds of sitting down im sleeping, even trough the liftoff. I wake up for the meals and go to sleep again straight after. I rather sleep on the plane than have to kill x hours sitting down

It also solves the jetlag issue, because my flight arrives in bankok early morning so my sleep scheduele is already "locked in".

My flight home from bankok was early morning so I went for a spree on Nana then back to the hotel and off to the Airport.

Edit: Also noise cancellation earbuds

I usually sleep good, but I got some Zopiclone last week for all my upcoming flights. Tested it last night...slept a little over 12 hours without waking up. I usually sleep a good 8 hours on flights so looking forward to seeing if I wake up when the plane has landed 😅

Decent neck pillow, noise cancelling earbuds (I use pixel buds), alcohol and drugs.

I take 5mg of valium whilst in the lounge and only drink red wine before flying as it has always made me sleepy. Once on the flight I'll take a zopiclone with another glass of red after the meal and like others put a crap movie on or watch the flight progress map.

If possible I always take the upgrade option of buying the seats next to me, but not all airlines offer this option and obviously it's not possible if the flight is full.

Even if I don't get much sleep the valium, zopiclone and red wine make the flight much more tolerable.

I'm fine with over the counter dramamine or bonine motion sickness pills. I only use them when flying so it's not often, and just two chewable tablets will have me sleeping most of the flight.
