Good and reliable place to rent scooter nowadays?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I will rent a scooter for 3 weeks from the end of january. It was many years since i was in pattaya, so everything has most probably changed since then.
Can anyone give advice about a good scooter rental where they are somewhat honest and reliable?

@pattayagolf Is your golf website still working? I can't seem to open it.
I'll be keen to have a hack around a golf course too

I've noticed less police on the road. Have they stopped checking for falangs without a Thai licence?

I've noticed the same. I suspect it's because there's too much traffic on roads now due to high season. If they set up their usual checkpoints they'd make the traffic backups even worse.

Ive seen a few controls out in the district and was stopped in one, on Christmas eve it was, just after leaving the 36 hitting Lieb Fang Rodfai Rd. All was to the officer's liking and he even wished me a Merry Christmas. Could be a drill before we see them again ...on one of their regular hang-outs 3rd/Xzyte plaza😋

Keep in mind that besides the DUI ticket, fines and deportation for scooter crimes, your travel insurance is zero for unlicensed scooter driving.

On my last trip I successfully used Ama trading who now have two branches on Soi Bukhaow, one near the turn for Soi Pothole and the new branch which is the other end beyond Witherspoons opposite the turn for Soi New Plaza.

Good quality 1 year old Honda Click, I paid 2500 baht for a month, but bear in mind I had a discount as a previous user and it was low season in August. Expect around 3k.

They also buy and sell decent 2nd hand bikes, gave me a good trade in for my Honda ADV 160, and had a good range of scooters for sale, will probably be my first port of call to buy next time I am in town.

Does one needs a Thai motobike driving license to drive on the road in Pattaya? Would an international driving license do?

You need an IDP with the correct qualification on it, ie bike licence if riding a bike. If you don't have a bike licence on your 'home' licence, it won't be annotated on your IDP and the cops will pull you for it.

Thanks. That makes sense.

Was hoping to rent a motorbike to drive around thinking all that requires is the passport to rent, but wouldn't want to risk getting pull over by the cops.

I can vouch for this place. I rented for almost 6 months, 2000 or 2500 a month. It was a basic scooter, but thats all I needed. If you rent from beach side rentals it will be more

They are an American and Thai couple. Good people no issues for me and they brought the bike to me.

Its high season and I havent checked current prices.

Understanding their fees is important here, the price changes if the bike is returned early.

An IDP is nothing more than a multiple language translation of your home drivers license which you have to have with you. With a motorcycle endorsement. Or a motorcycle only license which must exist in some places.

Thailand is part of a multi country compact which actually waives the need for an IDP if your license is from a compact country and is in English (or multiple languages one of which is English).

And if you have an accident on a moto without a license expect your travel insurance to refuse to pay a satang. Same as drunk driving or driving without a license which is basically what you'd be doing.

I frequently rent cars in Thailand and the occasional scooter.

At all rental car companies they just ask for my International Driving Permit. They usually don't even ask for my standard drivers license. The one time my IDP was expired by a week, they wouldn't rent me the car.

Been pulled over several times on a scooter. Just a flash of the International Driving Permit and as long as wearing a helmet on my way in seconds.

I too was surprised they didn't just accept my standard drivers license. Driven all over the world with it. Thailand has been the only country that has insisted on a IDP at every turn.
