I may consider buying a unit in an older condo complex but a bit annoyed with older toilets capabilities and wonder where  the restrictions in what toilet can swallow under of e.g. paper are in the toilet itself or does the restrictions origin in the (older) drain pipes?

Drain pipes in older places are typically undersized for the job, so a bin beside the shitter is extremely common.

Change it regularly and buy good quality air freshener and a fan.

The thread title got my hopes up for a scat or golden shower fetish!

Aaaanyway, beyond the stinky shit bin and multiple flushes and the need for a good plunger on standby, one other consideration-

In many cases, renters and guests in other units that aren't familiar with the 'constraints' of old systems will shitclog a vertical/horizontal run of drain. That will then back up black water into not only your crapper, but also thru your shower drain. If it occurs in the floor above, it'll drip it all down thru your bathroom ceiling. I guess we get to talk scat showers after all😃

Yeah, others shit sucks. The unit in question is on the top floor and one of the 4 units surrounding the tech room so if shit follows law of physic there should be no risk of black water from above

Top floor great for that, and also no clip-clop noise of high heels and bed gymnastics from the floor above😬 that really grates after a while.

You could still get somewhat backed up by a clog downhill of your unit, but much less likely since the unit below you would at that point would have (hopefully) complained about the shitwater coming out their toilet, shower drain, sink, etc!

Best of luck on the purchase, I did it myself a year ago- I think you are correct to consider all these things before taking the plunge, but in the end, finding the right place and being able to feel at home there makes all the difference to quality of life vs. renting IMO.

If you buy an older building (for example a shopfront) can you rip out the pipes and put bigger ones in?  Or is there a limit in the sewer line itself outside your property?

If you own the shopfront and the floors above, you could do so if you're willing to do a gut reno. The advantage there is you could also upgrade your own electric system at the same time.

The OP was looking at a unit in a condo complex, so he'd have to get the rest of the owners to buy into a retrofit for the entire complex.

We've all smelled and seen the sewer backups on the streets at times, I guess most houses/complexes must have a check valve or a pump to prevent the shit going back uphill?😆
