Travelling with inguinal hernia

Recommended Posts

Posted

I had meshes done on both side a few years ago.

Catched a bad cough in August and was coughing straight for a month. Held my side while coughing last week and sure I could feel it moving.

Got an ultra sound and the result is that I have a new inguinal hernia. I suspect I have it for a long time ( I was carrying heavy woods last winter ) just didn't know it.

Two different GP gave me the ok for travelling, but I can't see my surgeon before next month so no expert feedback.

I'm torn before staying home and being miserable for one month or sticking with my plan and coming to Pattaya for 3 weeks but potentially being super anxious about it.

As inguinal hernia is really common for guys, any of you having an experience on travelling with that condition and how long you waited to get it fixed ?

I got an inguinal hernia in Pattaya. I knew what it was at the time having had one on the other side years before. I had another week or so left in Pattaya followed by a week somewhere else before heading home. A couple of weeks after getting home I had it surgically repaired (mesh). I didn’t have any issues, but I did make the ladies do most of work during that last part of my trip. Just stating what happened to me. Not being a doctor, I can’t offer any advice. Sounds like a couple of GP’s already gave you theirs.

Had mine fixed about 15 years ago.   It was noticeably uncomfortable when I was stood up and drinking.  Back in those days it only took about 6 weeks on a waiting list to get surgery in the UK on the NHS.  Probably a lot longer than that now though!

I've known other people have them for several months before getting them fixed.  If you've had it for a long time without it getting worse, most likely it won't be a problem for you to travel.  But of course there is always a small risk that the intestine gets trapped inside the bulge, which would require emergency medical attention.  So I understand why it's a difficult decision to make.

Should have mentioned this is not my first rodeo as I have mesh on both side already. The new one is completely back in and not visible, however not sure how it will affect playtime with lady’s and in case of emergency if the local private hospital is up to standard or not.
Was planning to go and see a friend in Issan but not sure I will feel comfortable near nowhere major.

Maybe you need to find someone at home to practice with before you go? 😉

I'm only half joking.  The only way to see how it will affect playtime with ladies... is to have playtime with ladies.

At least if you do it in your home country first, you can make an educated judgement before you travel all the way to LOS.

I have travelled with an inguinal hernia. Should not be a problem on the plane. the main thing is not to make it any worse so avoid lifting anything heavy.  Also be careful of massages in case lady presses hard in that area which some do. i would also avoid cowgirl where they bounce on you.

Also I would travel with a support that you can wear to hold things together. This should also help stop it getting worse.

Just tell the girls your problem so they can be careful with you. They have heard it all before and no doubt seen a lot worse medical conditions.

Check on insurance to make sure pre-conditions are covered, an emergency repair will not be cheap.

Wow TinySkinnyLarry, I can say I know the pain. Happy to hear your doing well now.
For 3-years now, I was feeling sharp pain, I thought groin pull on a few occasions exiting car. Then this month, I saw the protrusion and severe pain where I could not more then about 100 feet without needing to lie down.      Turns out,  I have (similar to your explanation, two inguinal hernias), verified by Ultrasound, found two on me opposite sides and CT Scan found an umbilical hernia as well. Saw doc at Bangkok Pattaya and Bumrungrad finally decided with Bumrungrad (even though I live in Pattaya), insurance will cover surgery and two nights hospital at ฿600k.  Expensive, but even insurance said CT scan showed extra large tear and 15cm of protruded intestine.  Now scheduled for surgery next Tuesday at 13:30, doc says it will be a 5-hour operation which I thought unusual for laparoscopic, but he says, “due to complications of tear size.”   Hoping it won’t be too bad, pain wise, after surgery.  I will know better late Tuesday or Wednesday.

Abdominal hernias are a very common thing.  They are uncomfortable but the real issue is if it becomes "stuck" (aka incarcerated).  Then this can spell trouble if it stays stuck for many hours...  As long as you can push back the herniated part inside, it is manageable (called reduceable).  If it gets really stuck, then you need to seek care asap (not "in the morning" ... ).   Any general surgeon can try to reduce it without an operation (this should be bread and butter work for them) and if it fails then it's emergency surgery to un-stuck (reduce it) ASAP.  This usually is done without any imaging study if you can feel the hernia (if the incarceration happened just a few hours ago and there are no other signs of "danger") ASAP.   Actually a very good emergency doctor can also easily reduce incarcerated hernias, provided they do it the right way and with some painkilling.  Thus avoiding emergency surgery.

Once the diagnosis is made and the hernia does not need immediate surgery (aka it is NOT incarcerated) you can discuss with your surgeon the pros and cons of fixing it asap vs delayed.  If you are not living in Thailand or Cambodia/ Laos, I would not recommend you do it in Thailand.  Why?  Because if there is something surgeons do NOT like it is to have to deal with another surgeon's "haute couture" and with pieces of material coming from another country.  If you live here, by all means go ahead if you feel confident in your surgeon.  If you live in Cambodia or Laos, please come to BKK to get it done....

Hope this helps...
