Cost of Changing the date of my return flights

Recommended Posts

In December I'm flying solo to Thailand.  I was supposed to be away for 30 nights, spending 28 nights in Thailand but due to ill health of a family member I've had to change my return date.  So instead of spending 28 nights in Pattaya I can only spending 14 nights in Pattaya before flying home.  I'm flying with the Emirates and they charged me £117.45.  Not to bad I was expecting to be charged more

Yes reasonable charge indeed no one would quibble over that fee

Its such an odd figure am surmising its a percentage of what you originally paid

Yes it does seem an odd figure.  I've not tried to work out if it's a percentage of what I originally paid

Thats quite reasonable

As change fee's are normally based on the current cost of flights, (plus the fixed fee the airline charges, depending on your booking),  I'd imagine flying home mid-December is a cheaper time than flying home between Xmas & New Year. The flights will be much busier going the other way

I've been checking Emirates about the cost of delaying my flight home in February by 2 days, currently nearly £300 to fly back 48hrs later

When you buy a ticket the terms and conditions should be spelled out for cancel before travel, changes during travel, and no show fees.

Sometimes if there's no fee they will charge a fare difference for a change to outbound and return dates.

There's usually a change penalty. And you have to pay the fare difference, if the price is higher, they won't reimburse you if the price is lower.

Conditions may vary greatly between airlines and it is something that I always take into account when booking a flight, as I very often change return dates. My current flight cost me 50€ to change the date.

When I got in touch with Emirates I wasn't sure what to expect.  The only thing I was thinking was that as I was flying home on the 21st December instead of the 4th January the return flights would be cheaper on the 21st December than the 4th January so any penalty charge would reflect that
