Doxyprep for diarrhea?

Recommended Posts

Posted

Currently having Diarrhea for the third time this trip. (6 weeks)I ate at a place I didn't know. Normally I try to cook myself as much as possible and stick to 1 or 2 restaurants where I think the food is ok.

But it's getting really tiring. I had accute bronchitis as well and have been sick for 4 1/2 out of my 6 weeks here.

I looked into doxycycline and apparently it has been studied and shown to be effective as a prophylaxis  for travellers diarrhea.

It is also used as prep for certain std's so that would be a bonus.. It is also a malaria prophylaxis. Not an issue in Pattaya, but might be useful for those that travel to more rural areas.

Has anyone here tried? If so: how long did you take it? Effective? Side effects?

Currently on Azithromycin, hopefully that will clear it out. But got 10 days left and terrified to get sick again, so might give the doxycycline a go.

How about go to a hospital and see a doctor rather than seeking medical advice here.

Dude! I've been in and out of bkk hospital for the last 3 weeks, they don't know or pretend not to know about this, as it doesn't make them money..

Already spent around 25k, getting all sorts of useless stuff..

I just want to not get sick again, so I can fly home without too much trouble, maybe even enjoy myself for s few days..

Of course they know, they gave me the Azithromycin...

It'll work, it's just that usually a few days after I stop the antibiotics it'll all start over again. So I asked about prophylaxis and they wanted to give me some useless overpriced bullshit probiotic..

I want to take an antibiotic without too many side effects untill I go home..

Try Lomotil, always worked for me. Should be available at most Pharmacies.

I see I can't edit anymore, but I am not interested in anybody's opinions or "funny" (insulting) remarks.

If you don't have any experience with doxyprep, please just don't reply. I am too exhausted to deal with morons..

I think there is something like a 30 or 20 minute time limit on being able to edit posts. After that cannot change.

Isn't the internet great, you can call people that are just trying to help you bad names, with no consequences.

Side effect of antibiotics is very often.... wait for it ....

You are perhaps in a meds circle with the pills giving you the symptoms you are trying to defeat.

So here's what you do coming from someone who when I first moved to Bangkok eating with the rest of the business at the food courts and regularly sharting as a result. First dose of the trots you take 3-4 activated charcoal pills and drinking Royal D electrolyte drinks. NO coke, no fanta, no sugary drinks highly important.

A Guide to Eating Thai Food | CIEERoyal D Electrolyte Beverage 25g. | Order Online @ Tops Supermarket

Sold in all 7/11s and family marts.

Usually knocks the shats on the head in a day. Keep popping the carbon pills 3-4 at a time each time you have the shits and they soak up the nasties and you shit it out.

That will fix you. Taking endless antibiotics will not as they dump out your microbiome making you incredibly suspectable to food poisoning.

I know my microbiome is fucked, but it won't recover in a week. It'll take months and it'll be a hell of a lot easier at home.

I only have 8 days to bridge. My main focus is getting out of here in relative comfort. So an antibiotic could provide protection, since I have no natural protection and no time to build any..

Anyways I'm going to do it this way anyways, I was just interested if there was anybody out there who has tried, since it's also commonly used for std prevention.

But it seems nobody has, so this is all rather pointless..

Right - so you will ignore the advice of people who have lived there and defeated exactly what you are going through?

Why do you think every 7/11 has charcoal by the check out till? For fun?

Lomotil is a schedule V controlled drug in the USA. The most common anti diarrhea drug is Imodium which isn't scheduled and doesn't have atropine in it. Generic name is Loperamide.

Typical first line antibiotic treatment for food borne diarrhea is Ciprofloxacin. Taken as 1000 mg once and 500 mg twice a day for up to 3 to 5 days.

Doxycycline makes your skin quite sensitive to UV light e.g. sunlight.

Try Loperamide and Cipro vs. the combination of lomotil and doxycycline.

Also if the hospital did not test a stool sample for Giardia they should. Traveller's diarrhea resolves in days even without antibiotics. Giardia takes longer and is much worse. It's a parasite not unlike an amoeba. And it's common in Thailand.

A stool exam looks for the parasite and the eggs. Your stool should have been cultured after the first visit and tested for bacteria and parasite infections.

The good news is it is very easy to treat. A single dose of tinidazole 1000 mg usually does the trick.

Bad news with tinidazole or any azoles (like metronidazole) you can't drink alcohol 48 hours before and 48 hours after.

I had food poisoning last year in Pattaya, doctor gave me Tedium(loperamide)and Pepto Bismol for solid shits, also dont eat greasy or spicy food, worked for me instantly Unfortunately for me i had Noroviris and felt weak for three months but no diarrhea

Imodium instants work quick and if you can't find it then get regular Imodium or Loperamide.  I also learned to stay away from Hungry Hippo and Cheap Charlies.

If it is food poisoning, you do not want to slow the peristalsis down with loperamide (imodium). Cipro has severe side effects that happen in SOME people, one of them is tendons rupturing

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ciprofloxacin#Adverse_effects

Go to a lab such as life care, have them do a stool sample for 100 baht and have the analysis the same day http://lifecare.siam2web.com/?cid=1209619
Go see Doctor Olivier on Thepprasit and get sorted out. https://dr-olivier-clinic.com/

they dont care to investigate too much...

if you get a traveller diarrhea you can go to any pharmacy or look at google, but if you have a watery long lasting diarrhea and then you go to bkk pattaya hospital they will give you a sterile glass and will check the kind of infection it might be... and since diarrhea is just a symptom of so many causes , they will not waste a minute to listen to you gut story
