Khao Yai National Park

During the week of Songkran, we made a side trip to Khao Yai National Park Nakhon Ratchasima. It is about 130km or so from Korat City. As this park is extremely large, we could only see a small portion of it in one day. Entrance to the park is ฿20 Thai Nationals (or Thai DL) ฿400 Foreigners and ฿50 for vehicles. Since we had one Thai DL holder and I resemble a Thai, we got four plus a car in for ฿130. Woo hoo!

If you make it to the top of the mountain, the views are phenomenal.

Wait'll you see the size of this waterfall. There is a 100m or a 1,200m route to get to the waterfall. Guess which we took?

Yay! The waterfall!

And don't forget to visit the cafeteria area where you can get some nice whole chickens, somtam, sticky rice and noodles.

good pics and it is a good idea to get out of Pattaya during songkran.

I really hate this dual pricing but did you feel guilty about the park losing 380 baht that could have gone to help preserve the park? Anyway I probably would have done the same thing if given the chance. No not probably but for sure

A great place to escape the madness of Pattaya!

I camped here a couple of times in the late 80s and beginning of 90s, and trekked most of the trails.

Nice to see some new pictures from there brings back some memories.

Just a notice the National Park is situated mostly in Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat) province, and not in Nong Khai!

I'm still living with some repurcusions from my last trip there at the end of February, I'll tell you all about it soon. It's a great place to visit but you really need to do a bit of prior research and have your own vehicle to get the most from it, a lot of the major sights within the park are many KM's apart. I used to be a tour guide there many years ago and you can read about some of my adventures here. Thanks for the TR and pics CR.

I was thinking about doing the same thing during Songkran to escape the madness in Pattaya. In the end I gave it up as I thought there would be too many people up from Bangkok. Was that the case?

I spent a few days there about 18 months ago and it is a great spot. I definately want to go back.

I spent a few days there about 18 months ago and it is a great spot. I definately want to go back.

If you want to avoid the crowds then it's best to stay away on Friday and Saturday nights, especially if you intend to use one of the campsites. I should imagine that it would get busy over the Songkraan period. If you intend to do some hiking then any time away from the rainy season is good because most people do not get too far from the Park HQ or the major sights like Hiew Narok and Hiew Sawat water-falls. You can hire a Park Ranger for the day for around 500 Baht. They will be willing to take you on some of the less frequently used trails.
