Flight prices back to "near normal" compared to Covid times

Ive done Zurich, Helsinki and Munich to Bangkok in the last 18 months, and they were a mistake, well for me anyway.

I think its far better going via the Middle East with a 3ish hour stop between flights. True you get into Bangkok or another Asian city a bit later, but I think its worth it. Havent done Emirates, but have used Gulf Air, Oman Air and Turkish Airlines and all were good, I think Turkish Airlines are one the best around.

Hi guys, I'll be planning on using TK in the next couple of weeks. Does anyone know if they are using the new S Terminals in Swampy or the usual ones Gates D - G?

Am thinking of booking the fast track if they are using the old terminal, but if they are landing in the new terminal, I don't need.

TIA.

Since Covid i've only booked direct with the airline, just incase.

Had been thinking of looking at 'online agents' again, a lot cheaper, then starting to read about the dreaded C word making a come back again, sigh!

Thai and Eva direct flights from London still up 50% or more from pre-covid prices.

I've noticed the international flights for my parents to come over during the Thai school holidays are reasonable again.

What I'm getting absolutely railed on is domestic flights still, esp the bag fees.

Have you or anyone here flown Emirates before? How was the split? I'm guessing you're flying EDI-DXB-BKK. Is the 6-7 hour split flights easier than one long haul?

I tend to look to fly with AirFrance/KLM from Newcastle just because the Paris/Amsterdam is an easy connection and they're often the cheapest/fastest anyway. The last few times though the 11-12 hour flights really drag though; didn't help my flight out last time I had a screaming and kicking four year old behind me THEWHOLEWAY.

I have twice. After the 2nd trip with Emirates I felt the layover wasn't worth it for me.

First time went well. Was November 2023. Had access to lounge so could hang there, eat and then continue.
Second time, april 2024, to BKK went well as well. But the return was bad. It was days after the heavy rain in DXB. Had to circle before landing. Then a long bus ride. Followed by rushing to the next flight, despite taking a 2h45m layover.
There is also a security check to and from BKK on DXB but that's more me always taking direct flights and never experiencing that.
Another thing, I've always left late with Emirates on all 4 flights.
So the 50-100 euro difference with Emirates wasn't worth it for me as I it only made things longer. It's the reason why I have avoided the Finair flight. Always cheaper than both.

With Flying Blue you get a free checked bag if you have silver.

On the leg to DXB there were always seats available.

In your case having 2 legs helps you avoid suffering through 12 hours of screaming kids. It's only 6.

I've also experienced that having a small trolley is more than enough for me. Get all if not most of my liquid stuff in Thailand. And do laundry often. So KLM is an option, as long as they don't act silly with their prices.

In the end you have to try it yourself. What doesn't work for me, might work for you and better. Not to mention better looking stewardesses than the KLM hags

Stopover and no booze?   It’s a no from me.

Why do you "need" booze, have a drink problem?

Is this true?

Some months ago I read on a web site that there is a bargain time to buy airline tickets, time to buy, not to travel. The writer said this is the week between Christmas Day and New Year.

This year the days are Wednesday 25 Dec - Wednesday 1 Jan 2025.

I am planning to fly Melbourne to Bangkok in mid-January and to return about three weeks later. If I follow the web advice I'll be booking only two to three weeks before departure day. I'm interested in full-service carriers only; Thai (direct) is number one choice with Singapore and Malaysia as possibles, depending on prices. Budget carriers are a no-no for me as they are too squashy for my 180cm/6 foot body for 9+ hours in the plane.

Can any bm advise please?

These myths just won't die.  Once upon a time, it was said to be cheapest to book on Tuesday mornings.

Airlines don't care about when you book but what they do is that they release the cheapest tickets first.  So you should book as early as you can, some airlines will let you book a year before the flight, other will be nine months or later still.  So plan and book your trip as early as possible.

The other option is to leave it really late, in the final weeks before a flight, prices may drop if not enough tickets are sold but that does not happen very often.  You run the great risk of not being able to buy a seat which is very likely on an international flight, mine always appear to be full.

I have daily price alerts set for flights and they definitely go up and down in price. I have noticed that they DO tend to go up a little in price around the weekend and down a little midweek. Whether that is due to airline or ticket wholesalers changing their prices, I'm not sure. Then of course virtually every airline operates dynamic pricing.

@bonkabit Some airlines has 'sales' starting on Boxing Day (even Xmas Day) similar to other retailers. If it is a classic case of inflated prices in the run up to Xmas, followed by a '20% off sale' after Xmas I wouldn't like to say. Before now I have grabbed a good price on a flight booked on Xmas Day. I had been monitoring the price of the flight for the six weeks prior and then on Xmas Day it went dramatically down in price. Whether I could have got the same price if I had booked in October is a different question!

I just casually looked at Christmas day back to London one way

China Southern at just £182 with less than 2 hours in transit  !!  Quite a few others not much more as well

Thanks for advice. I'm currently tracking Melbourne-Bangkok returns, leave second half of January for three weeks, on Skyscanner and on Google. If and when a full-service carrier, hopefully ThaiAir direct, drops below $A1000/~22,000 bahts I'll book.

Perhaps Father Christmas will bring me the present!

About a week ago there was an article about all the flights from Thailand, the flight companies  their fares and times of flight. What's happened to it? It was very helpful.

From Copenhagen to Bangkok prices are still two times as high as before the pandemic! 🤨

Back in 2018 I paid 4900 SEK(460 US$) with Thai Airways for a nonstop return trip,

now same ticket with Thai is about 11000 SEK( 1030 US$)! 😢

2018 I got about 4 Baht for 1 SEK, today I only get 3,15 Baht!  🥹

Best year was 2014 when I got about 5 Baht for 1 SEK! 🙂

The thread title is very mis-leading  :)

A few obscure airlines may offer a cheaper price very occasionally at selected times/dates, but thats certainly not the norm

Emirates prices are around 60% higher than they used to be, a £500 flight now costing over £800

Emirates from Copenhagen-Bkk  is now 1010 US$, but it is not a direct flight.

KLM seems to be one of the cheapest airlines from CPH at 840 US$ via Amsterdam.

There are also combinations of 2-3 airlines to be had at about 800 US$, but total flight times are very long at up to 35 hours!

Before vs after: 50-100% price increase

I have the same experience with Emirates, at least a 50% increase in fares and I try to book early to get the cheapest fares.  KLM / AF used to be more expensive before Covid but it is cheaper as their fares have not changed so much, although less convenient and lower quality.

One slight problem being, little/no public-transport running, when you get there on Boxing-Day ?

Whereas flying on December 26th, it's mostly creaking back into action, by the time you land on the 27th.

Out of the USA ... Business & premium economy are both still double the price. Economy is now about 25% more though cheaper than last year.
