The Great British fish and chip shop

Hello All,

My name is Kevin and I am the active partner in the Great British Fish & Chip Shop located on Soi Khao Noi over on the ‘dark-side’ of Pattaya. Some of you will know me from either my four years at Jasmine Mansion on Soi Baukaow or my book, Riff-Raffles, which was published two years ago now.

I started the fish and chip shop with a friend of mine, however, he left the business recently to look into other opportunities outside of Pattaya. Another friend, who resides permanently in the U.S.A, has taken over as my business partner in this venture.

For the first few months of operation we were all rather feeling our way and, in hindsight, it was a case of the blind leading the even blinder! We made numerous errors, particularly with our staffing, and to be totally honest a lot of the food we produced was well, well, well below the standard I was hoping to achieve. Over the past month or so I have addressed this matter and believe we are now producing excellent quality food, day in and day out. I believe the main problem was that this was not a type of business I had ever operated before and I therefore allowed the cooks more latitude than was wise – the real problem, I have learnt, is that cooks do no more than pay lip service to what you tell them, they believe they already have all the knowledge necessary. For any of you who had a meal here in our formative months and were, shall I say, disappointed all I can do is sincerely apologise and urge you to give us another try.

We sell quality Atlantic Cod Fillets (medium or large) and ‘John Dory’, a flat whitefish which is imported from Vietnam, and again medium or large fillets are available. We use a home-made beer batter which we have improved upon considerably over the past months and have at last been able to find a potato wholesaler who consistently provides us with good quality potatoes that make excellent ‘British Style’ chips. All Fish and Chips are served with our new home-made Tartar Sauce and a lemon wedge.

We offer a range of other favourites for this type of establishment such as calamari (squid in batter) and scampi (prawns in batter), various pies and pasties, jumbo sausages, with or without batter, spam fritters, burgers, oven roasted half or whole chicken, chicken nuggets, home-made fish cakes and we are hoping to have saveloy’s imported from the U.K shortly. We also offer a range of accompaniments including mushy peas, mushy pea fritters, baked beans, garden peas, curry sauce, beef gravy and chicken gravy.

Our International meals include Lasagna, Chilli-Con-Carne, Spaghetti Bolognese, Spring Rolls, Chinese style Sweet and Sour Pork or Chicken, Chicken Curry and Beef Curry.

The latest addition to our menu is Lamb Doner Kebabs. We started these around late February and after a few weeks of teething troubles now have these tasting every bit as good, if not better, than what you may have got back home in the U.K. We use the finest New Zealand lamb which is marinated in our own recipe sauce and blended with a range of herbs and spices. The meat is served in a Pita bread, NOT a wrap, with a fresh mixed salad and Chilli Sauce, Garlic Sauce and Mint Sauce are available.

I will post some pictures shortly to give you an idea of the food here.

We are open from 12:00 midday to 12:00 midnight Tuesday to Sunday, we are closed on Monday’s. We offer an eat-in, take-away or FREE delivery service throughout Pattaya. We can also be found on the new delivery service menu – Delivery Express who can be reached at www.deliveryexpresspattaya.com or by phone on 038 427 177 or 038 427 178. For orders directly to The Great British Fish & Chip Shop please call 0845 616476. Prices are exactly the same for delivery orders directly from us or via Delivery Express.

I do hope that you will give us a try or try us again as the case may be. I am determined to ensure that we become the leading Fish and Chip shop in the area over the next six months and any constructive comments would be greatly appreciated in assisting me in achieving this goal.

Best Regards,

Kevin

Kevin, good luck with the business. Do you have a website with a map, or perhaps could you post a screenshot of Google maps or so? I'll be giving it a try in May.

Kevin, I had met you when you were out passing out flyers when you first started up the shop. You were a decent guy in person, and I wish you all the best with the shop. When I am back out that way again, will be sure to visit you.

I came around at a little after 7:30 a couple of nights ago looking for a feed and the place was closed for the night. Maybe it was a day off. I really hope you have done away with the syrofoam packaging for take-aways. It only serves to make the chips soggy and adds to the landfill. Paper only and I will be happy.

Why the DARK SIDE for your location? Most have never been in this area especially a tourist..Prices posted and a Map would help..I live here and I do not remember this soi? I go by Numbers versus Names of Streets...

No place on the Planet like Pattaya..Don't let your meat loaf

Yes, but it is very often done badly. A nice piece of haddock in a light and tasty batter and chips freshly cooked in beef dripping can be very good.

Only certain varieties of potato will make good chips, temperature of the oil and cooking time is critical. Both fish and chips must be cooked freshly.

The Dory they use in quite a few places here is a decent alternative to Cod or Haddock which is getting rare now.

In Durham where I am from it was always cod and in Yorkshire and Scotland where I went to Uni it was Haddock - regional preferences!

The delivery menu prices seem steep...are the shop prices better?

I guess the prices in the shop are the same, since it says "free delivery". That wouldn't make sence if the prices where higher than in the shop.

reading all this thread has made me hungry to say the least , dont know why everyone says the darkside is far out or miles away its only 5 mins or so by car from center of town , i rented a villa there for 3 weeks and not 1 person i spoke to knew where it was and no-one even know what or where the railway line was

seems most of the guys and gals around here know 3 or 4 roads from where they live and thats about it
