Ubon Ratchathani

Work has asked me whether Id be interested in a shorter assignment in this city. I have never been to Isaan before, but I have spent some time in Vientiane and lived 15 years in SE Asia.

While I have been visiting Thailand for entertainment, I was staying in and happily enjoying the tourist bubble. Thailand was just 'fun' for me. I also never had any long or deep discussions with Thai ladies, hence I don't have the knowledge or understanding that most of you that live in Thailand or marry province girls have.

Workwise Ill be fine, there is a reason they asked me to go. But I need to enjoy my time up there. I don't want to be one of those expats that 'live' in Bangkok but work in the province. Spending the weekdays waiting for my flight to BKK and sulking all Sunday knowing I need to fly back to Ubon Ratchathani. I want to enjoy my experience in the province and make the most of it.

Hence I come to you lot seeking some good advice and tips. I know nothing about the place, hence Id love some advise anything, but especially best/ most enjoyable hotels (work pays so budget isn't an issue), nice bars, places that shows the football with English commentary, good places for food, things to do and good people to meet up with etc.

I recently met another American here  in Isaan I live in a village. One of my first statements to him, was that you must be married to a local girl as there is no other excuse for living here.

Having said that, if you are living in a city I would think it would be very easy to find a young Thai lady that would like to live with you. And the non bargirl experience is very pleasant. Plenty of Thai dating sites.

Anyway good luck I would take the job and enjoy the adventure! When I need a get away I take the train to Bangkok for 4or 5 nights. and Pattaya when friends are over from the States.

I suggest you contact Brent, the owner of the Outside Inn in Ubon (Facebook - the outside inn-ubon), he is an American who has lived there many years and should be able to give you a good rundown. His guesthouse has a Mexican Restaurant and is a bit of an expat hangout. They have nice rooms but guesthouse style.

I have spent a few trips in Ubon and like it but it is pretty quiet at night. There are 4 universities in the city and no shortage of pretty young ladies. It is a spread out city so may need a vehicle to get around although Bolt works fine.

Really good hotels are scarce although a new Centara opened this year, haven't seen it myself but they are normally very well run.

https://www.thailandredcat.com/nightlife-and-thai-girls-in-ubon-ratchathani/ is pretty accurate.

You are close to southern Laos, which is worth a side trip or two.
