Anti spyware

My question is being what is enough protection. I currently have AVG for my antivirus and use both Glary Utilities and AdAware. I had been using SpyBot Search and destroy along with these other two. I noticed that if one program didn't pick up any bugs the other would. Yesterday I was having problems with the SpyBot running slow and freezing up at almost the end of the scanning. I uninstalled it and reinstalled and was having the same issue with the scanning running slow. Do I need the SpyBot program if I am using the other two, or does anyone recommend another program to run with the ones I have now.

I am always trying out all the AV and Internet Security products, free as well as those available from Tukcom.

Norton Internet Security 2009 is fast and does a good job at detection and includes a firewall and anti spy as well, you can find a software thet resets the 15 day trial if you want to evaluate the product for longer.

Bit Defender 2009 is also good and actually found some virus or trojans that Norton missed.

AVG free is good if you run XP 64 bit like me as some others wont run on 64 bit.

Another good freebie is Avira.

For a stand alone spyware tool I use Ad Aware

Thanks guys for all your input. I installed Malwarebytes and am using it with my AVG antivirus. Along with AdAware and Glary Utilities, I use Cleanup too. I run a scan and cleanup every time I do any online banking.

Bloody spyware has been driving me nuts the last couple of days. Spybot couldn't catch em, Housecall couldn't catch em, Windows firewall is useless.

I used Hijack this but still had a problem. I ran Vundofix but it didn't see anything.

So I tried A-Square free and it grabbed up 43 pests! But it missed a couple cos the computer is still acting weird.

I CCleaner 10 times a day, but that only clears out your RAM cache. Use it it helps.

I dunno what to do next. If I reformat the HD it means a whole day will be lost re-loading software.

Hijack this creates a log file of things that need reviewing... So submit the hijack this to the appropriate forum and some techs will tell you what is happening with your machine...

As a techie, I always backup my work and format my pc every so often... Its a pain in the butt, but windows likes to loose simple files every now and again, which do slow down things at times...

I made a HUGE mistake going to VISTA, so I will be formatting hopefully tonight and go back to XP.... For most people VISTA is fine, but for me it is the slow boot and shutdown times of programs and file transfering issues that make that extra minute wait, become an eternity as I have to wait before getting on with the task of my work....

A format and software load should only take 2-3 hours... Its always a good idea to save all your NEEDED software on a partition so when windows is installed, its just a matter of accessing the drive needed and installing all the software...

ALSO... if you have installed new fonts... make sure you copy them to the area where you save your software, that way you wont have to hunt around and look for those fonts again...

You could always try going back a week or so on your "Restore previous configuration".... It has helped me a few times, however I do know that its not 100%

If you get a mac... well, its a new learning curve...

If you go for a linux distro, then prepare to be frustrated and also know that some software/games will not work, even with "WINE" installed.... Its a great OS, but can be a pain in the butt at times...

When Norton finally builds software that is not BLOATED and eats up so many resources, then maybe its worth looking into....

:beer9:

ESET NOD32

SPYBOT search and destroy

SCOTTY WATCHDOG (unbelievably great free software)

PEER GUARDIAN (good for torrent protection)

USB Disk Security is great when you share content or use the bug infested pc's at a cafe...

ALSO NOTE: In most cases, people who borrow software and or exchange USB sticks, will often ALLOW bugs to get in .... Most times it IS your own fault... :D

I hope I have helped in some way....

Cheers mate :GoldenSmile1:

Hi CH, I have been waiting for CreatOS to go Beta for a while. But it will be a while longer!

I would be happily try a Linux system.... but not Ubuntu which I tried a couple of years ago and found wanting. It needs to run Windows apps. I've heard there is an add-on called Wine for Windows.

Each Linux website I visit gives a lot of info but not much of it useful to the average computer user like myself. I want to know what it will do for me in language that I will understand. I understand XP & Windows and I want a similar experience.

If you like to rely on free software check out majorgeeks.com , has loads of free anti- virus , maleware , spyware software

as well as a section for people who are first time users of their website , look into this section where they explain what is on

their site to download that will help protect you....

Usually downloading from dodgy Porn sites will mess up systems , but can't imagine anyone in this forum having issues with

that.........
