No Thai moto gp champion...How come? 2009 moto gp thread

I dont understand how a country like thailand hasn't produced a top line motocyc racer.

When you look at how much (99%???) of the male population start riding at an early age,

that they are crazy and have a no fear attitude, it seems strange.

Australia has a very small motorcycle rider base to draw from but we come up with great riders all the time

even to the shame of the USA and the Brits, little own a country of a similar population!

There is money around for motorcycle racing in thailand

Yes they've got Ratthapark Wilairot running around in the soon to be defunct 250 gp's

but he not going to win a 250 race and is really there because of thai money.

I would love to see it happen, I think the thais as a nation would find it a uniting force (which they need atm)

Australia has found its world presence and pride thru sport more than anything else.

If there was some thai beating stoner, hayden or toseland and even rossi

You would see people dancing on the streets .

I would like to see another Aussie upfront. Casey Stoner will be the man with Rossi a distant second. :P

Motorbike GP is dominated by Italians, Spainish, Japanese, with a sprinkling of Australians, Yanks and Brits. DORNA have little interest in promoting Thai riders because the TV advertising revenue, sponsors and big cc motorbike sales are small compared to more developed markets.

Because of lack of presence of British riders, DORNA (MotoGP organisers) gave special backing to Smith, Webb and Redding - I would doubt this would happen for a Thai rider, but that is the only way. Being a crazy fast motorcycle taxi rider is a long way from making it in MotoGP.

Motorbike GP is dominated by Italians, Spainish, Japanese, with a sprinkling of Australians, Yanks and Brits.

from the last race

5 italians

4 spanish

2 ozzies (3 last year)

2 yanks

1 everyone else including japanese

Wouldn't call it domination as such maybe with the lower cc classes included

but who cares who won the last few 125 championships other than

if they make their mark in the main class

i do and follow it nit noi.

Yes riders get places based on their marketability and the thai market is zero

but the oz market is very very small compared with most others like france or germany japan etc.

and true its easier to market a fast ozzie than a fast thai to europe or even japan.

so theres some agreement there

Being a crazy fast motorcycle taxi rider is a long way from making it in MotoGP.

not really my point, which is, that the talent pool of young guys able to ride a bike fast

is large in los and that with that pool they should have been able to produce/find someone fast enough

to make it into motogp or it predecessors.

all imo and speculation of course

cheers

ps congrat to stoner 7.77 sec win is a nice way to start
