Songkran Cancelled !

Pattaya - Songkran celebrations in Pattaya will not be much fun this year because Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has declared a state of emergency in Chon Buri province, which prohibits any gatherings of five or more people, the resort city's mayor Itthipon Khunpleum said Saturday.

The resort city, where the Asean summits are taking place, has had to cancel many events prepared for the water festival, which in Pattaya runs from April 9 to today, he said.

The cancellations might translate into losses of Bt70 million per day, he added.

More than 4,000 members of the American Navy, who were scheduled to dock in Pattaya this week, have already cancelled, the mayor said.

The state of emergency, declared to control the situation after the red-shirt protesters broke into the summit venue, made Songkran in Pattaya a very quiet one, he said.

Some 10 people were injured in a clash between the red-clad protesters and the government-sponsored security men in blue yesterday morning. Now, the protesters are accusing the government of using force against them

The mayor added that the special Songkran events planned in Pattaya for April 19 would also be affected by the incident and the state of emergency.

Lads, I am hitting town on Friday. What does this current situation mean? I hear on the news that there is a State of Emergency in place?

True/False and what is the situation at BBK airport?

Need the low-down asap.

Exactly! Even if it would be nice if they could cancel SK, it's not possible. It's a force of Thai nature.

It will not happen. Songkran means to much to the Thais people and will go on. I have heard the State of Emergency has already been lifted.

Lets see what the next chapter will be in this story.

The UDD (ie the red shirts) has said that their people will return to Bangkok. Once they are out of Pattaya and the delegates of the summit are on their way it will be business as usual. However, this is certainly going to hit the already hurting tourist industry.

Not true at all. Just spoke with a few of the servicemembers and there is no news of any recalls back to the ship nor any cancellation of any port calls. According to them, the entire crew is still on shore leave.

We did see the red shirts coming down Third towards North taking up all the lanes of traffic (both directions) to leave towards BKK. There were some red shirts out blocking traffic, and the cops just stood watching.

I just flew into the BKK airport Friday night and other than the damn immigration lines being horrendously long and the agents taking their sweet time processing people.....an hour plus wait....there were no problems. Taxis were quick and easy to get to when I finally got through. I know the red shits are blocking some of the streets in BKK but they took the holiday off blocking the streets. So at least until after the 16th BKK might be not too bad.

I would not want to be the guy who tells 4000 US sailors that we won't be stopping in PATTS!

Could be a mutiny.

Try and tell a horney group of 4000 US Marines that they can't have R N R in Pattaya and they will demolish the Red Shirts and hunt down Thaksin and force him to F**K himself. Screw politics! This crap is destroying the Thai tourist industry. As for me, I am coming in July, Red Shirts or no Red Shirts.

The pro and con government protesters are hurting the Thai tourism in a huge way. I really hope that things will get back to normal asap and that Pattaya and LOS gets back its great funtime that it always had.

Cheers,

Friday and Saturday saw a heavy police and military presence. On friday night I encountered a Red Shirt road block, did a swift 180 and no problem. The trouble on 3rd road on saturday compelled me and my mate to spend 11 hours and a fair few baht on Soi 6. Every cloud has a silver lining!

The Thai girls were celebrating Songkran and the Reds in Singapore last night a bit premature methinks.

Anyone heard any more about the alcohol ban they were talking about? Something lke closing the bars an hour earlier each day headed towards the 18th and 19th where the bars will be closed altogether. Also the banning of alcohol sales? Was something about it in the post last week.

That was only a proposal. I don't think it got any further than that and the government have bigger things to worry about now.

Be ok for short time, long time we all loose - deprived BG not a pretty sight you dont see them shity often but when they do get shity ..WATCH OUT :D

The reds have gone back to Bangkok now and there is an emergency state going on at the moment. Pattaya seems to be alright again. There has been an attack on a car in Bangkok, where the red shirts thought the prime minister was inside. Luckely for mister Abhisit he was inside another car.

Everything looks good at moment. I havent seen a single copper in the three days i've been here. There was plenty of water pistol action on Soi 7 this afternoon.

Nothing to worry about from where i'm looking....
