There is only a 45 minite layover in Taipei on the LAX to BKK flight on EVA. Hence, the direct flight is not really a major advantage for Thai Air.

Seems you are correct, thanks for pointing that out. Last time I flew with EVA (and all the times before that) the layover in TPI was around 3 hours. Definitely big points to EVA for cutting down the time. Perhaps because of the direct-flight competition from Thai...? Good news either way.

In addition, the EVA flight leaves LAX at 5 PM vs 11 PM for Thi Air. For me, this works much better.

I flew Thai air direct from NYC to BKK 17hrs (they no longer have this flight) and the service was great. I have also traveled to BKK on Cathay and JAL they were fine as well. One thing when I got on Thai airlines in NYC I really felt that my Thai experence begain at that moment the food the music the flight attendents evertything.
